So an insurance underwriter who was responsible for the administration of insurance coverage for an asset worth millions of dollars simply took someone’s word at face value here, instead of reviewing the actual appraisal that the applicant claimed was the basis of the asset valuation?

If even a fraction of these allegations are true, then you get the impression that the New York banking and insurance industries are filled with some of the dumbest people in the human race.
It also raises another question entirely, which should be the first thing an investigator asks about matters like this: Why the hell would someone want to inflate the value of a property for insurance purposes? They’d end up paying HIGHER premiums than they should.
