They drank the koolaid.
Or...
A Heavens Gate type bird cult.

So much for the “intelligence of the swarm.” I’m guessing that they were probably feeding on something that got them a little drunk and drove accordingly.

Just a couple of years ago, researchers for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority found over 200 dead crows near greater Boston recently, and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu. A Bird Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone’s relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu. The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts.
However, during the detailed analysis it was noted that varying colors of paints appeared on the bird’s beaks and claws. By analyzing these paint residues it was determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks, while only 2% were killed by an impact with a car.
MTA then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of truck kills versus car kills.
The Ornithological Behaviorist very quickly concluded the cause: when crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow in a nearby tree to warn of impending danger.
The scientific conclusion was that while all the lookout crows could say “Cah”, none could say “Truck.”
(too soon?)

Another take was that the flock flew into a power line and arc/flash happened.

These are blackbirds so I guess you can’t expect the flight precision of geese. They seemed to be startled to me. The lower flying ones bit it on the edge of that building and the ground.

Crows were the 7th smartest on a list of animals I saw once, right behind pigs. They actually do use cars as tools, they’ll drop nuts from the powerlines for cars to crack open.

"none could say "Truck".
The inability to used the letter R in phonics is due to the slang dialect of natives in Massachusetts.
A sort of ebonics for that foriegn state. The crows there picked up on it as a habit.

Heh, there was an article recently where they said they have a cigarette butt problem in Japan where people drop them all over the place, and they were going to train crows to pick them up and get a pellet of some food when they deposit them somewhere.
Heh, some wag of a Freeper said “Just wait until the crows figure out that dropping the right sized thing will get them the food, or...something more valuable, like a cylindrical USB thumb drive, a piece of jewelry around a woman’s neck, or the fob for a keyless car!
Society would fall apart!

Oh and a warning about Plymouth Rock chickens...
When they moved in to their stylish new house I told a couple of them that it was “party time.”
Word quickly spread.
Imagine the mess!

Looks more like a sudden strong downdraft that pushed half of the flock hard into the ground. The other half simply flew away unscathed.
I agree with this guy.
