I find it hard to believe Putin would move that much equipment and risk his economy to simply occupy those two small areas. What will be his justification to take all of East Ukraine to the river, including Kiev?
Yes, the Usurper and chief handlers got out maneuvered. Putin knew they were trying to use him as a distraction, all the ended up doing was giving Putin the chance to set the stage for an annexation much like Sudeten crisis Hitler capitalized on.

Also, the Western News Misleadia makes out like Ukraine hates Russia. It doesn't. There are more Russian/Ukranian marriages than any other. They speak identical languages. Their ties are deep, and their people have very little animosity to one another.
