California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) vowed Monday evening to build a “firewall” around California in the form of a state constitutional amendment guaranteeing abortion as a right, after a draft Supreme Court decision reversing Roe v. Wade (1973) leaked.
The decision, in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, concerns a Mississippi law passed in 2018 that bans all abortions abortions after the first 15 weeks into pregnancy. The case was heard by the Court last fall.
At the time, observers believed that the Court was likely to uphold the Mississippi law, based on the comments of justices in oral arguments. Some, however, believed that there were enough votes on the Court to overturn Roe altogether, returning the question of abortion to the states rather than allowing it to continue as a constitutional right implied in the right to privacy.
After the leak of the opinion, supporters of abortion were furious. Gov. Newsom tweeted that he and other Democrats were going to “fight like hell”:

“I’ve noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born.
Ronald Reagan”
They’re gonna “fight like hell”?
Okay. It’ll probably be more like “fight the whole state INTO Hell”.
Let’s see...mega-drought in progress, summer hasn’t even happened yet with hot, dry conditions... most of the state is an earthquake zone...rampant crime...
All the Lord has to do is decide which ‘smite’ button to press.
Going back to the states would be great in that hopefully libs would flee red states like Texas and pack into blue states.
California needs a wall to stop people from leaving. And machine gun towers and mine fields. (Once upon a time this would have been considered sarcasm.)
Has a ring to it, doesn't it?
Murder enshrined in their Constitution. Wow.
Speaking of mega-drought, wait until summer when the wildfires kick up. Newsom won’t be thinking about abortion rights as the state burns to the ground. The coming fires could very well be apocalyptic in their scope and ferocity.
I believe we’re living in at least the prelude to the end times. God help us!
California can implement any laws regarding abortion that are approved by the citizens or their representatives. That is the point of the Alito decision. Roe v. Wade was bad, wholly made-up law that had no basis in the Constitution.
Any California law would have to be in compliance with the US Constitutional 13 and 14th civil rights amendments. The pro-life lobby will certainly work to influence the California voters as is their right.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) vowed Monday evening to build a “firewall” around California in the form of a state constitutional amendment guaranteeing abortion as a right,
This is what the Supreme court decision calls for,
Return this to the voters of the state.
There are no internal borders preventing any one from
traveling to another state for an abortion...
I don’t know that abortion rights is enough of a motivator to relocate to another state but I can say that moving for lower taxes, less covid restrictions and more affordable real estate are motivators.
The number of out of state license plates in just my town alone is unbelievable.
My greatest fear is they brought their left leaning political beliefs and voting habits with them.
You know what they say, you can’t fix stupid.
That’s why I titled the above ‘Federalism.’ Our side has to know that this just transfers the fight to the States....
Abort Gruesome
What state?
“constitutional right implied in the right to privacy.”
That is such a moronic and ridiculous standard.
According to that I can kill or do anything in the PRIVACY of my home?
The idea of an ‘implied’ right as opposed to an ‘explicit’ one is in itself ‘moronic.’
The Constitution is a foundational document, it either says something or it doesn’t.
Yet he signed an abortion bill in CA which I believe signaled to SCOTUS they could rule in favor of this horrendous mess.
Reagan was much criticized for that abortion bill in the 1980 primaries.. mostly by Democrats accusing him of johny-come-lately hypocrisy. My understanding is that support for the bill was so strong that vetoing it would have been quickly over ridden by the Assembly. It is still a black mark on Reagan’s career.
