You should keep a close eye on barges.

You probably do not spend much time thinking about barges. This is something that you ought to change.

The barge industry is quite important. It’s crucial for moving aluminum, petroleum, fertilizer and coal, particularly on the Mississippi River and its tributaries. About 60% of the grain and 54% of the soybeans for U.S. export are moved via the noble barge. Barges touch more than a third of our exported coal as well.

Right now the barge industry — and all of us who depend on its wares — is mired in a crisis. Water levels on the Mississippi River Basin are at its lowest point in more than a decade.

About 10 years ago we stayed at a B&B in Natchez located on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. The barge traffic was continuous.

I keep telling friends to prepare if they can.

I’ve even offered to go do the shopping if they’ll pay for their own food. No charge from me; I just have to schedule it.

The Mississippi River is low. But it is always low this time of year.

Yes this year’s droughts are making the river lower than resent years.

The river is at around the 3rd lowest on record.

But it is a river, they rise and they fall and the rise again.

The next global warmning will be #250,001
Global warming follows ice age every 15000-30,000 years
Earth is 5 billion years old. Divide 5 Billion by 20,000 and you get 250,000 cycles.

The northeast has been very dry. We have a pond on our property and it was down a couple feet.

A few weeks ago, we got 2” of rain a week for about three weeks ina row.

The system that came through Thurs- Fri dumped about 3” of rain on us. The pond is starting to look better.

We noticed, however, that all kinds of creeks, streams, and rivers are also down a lot and we know people who have had problems with their wells.

packagingguy :" I crossed the bridge over the Mississippi yesterday. Water was very low. "

yes , the river is very, very low
Because of the low water, the Corps of Engineers are dredging the river so that barge commerce and traffic can continue.
According to Bloomberg, barges are currently running with only 80% of their volume so that they won't run aground;
that's a 20% drop of primarily agricultural grains, ag livestock feeds during harvest season, and large bulk materials.
That is 20% less product moving while fuel expenses continue to rise to astronomical levels.
At one point last week, there were 1600 barges awaiting at Stack Island for dredging to move products down to the Gulf seaport.

I’m always 3 weeks ahead in my grocery shopping.

When the sh*t hit the fan March 2020 when people panic bought and cleared every shelf at the store, I had food.
