Putin's nuclear threats are pushing people like Trump and Elon Musk to press for a Ukraine peace deal. A nuclear expert warns that's 'dangerous.'

An understandable desire to avoid a nuclear war could actually make the world more dangerous if it means rushing to implement a "peace" in Ukraine that serves Russian interests, an expert told Insider.

Such a move, which some influential figures have called for, risks setting a precedent that atomic blackmail is the way to win wars and take territory troops can't otherwise hold, a model that could be copycatted by even the weakest nuclear-armed states, and may only succeed at delaying another war.

Pavel Podvig, an expert on Russia's nuclear doctrine and capabilities at the UN Institute for Disarmament Research, said in a phone interview from Geneva that such a deal — on terms deemed favorable by Moscow, in the wake of battlefield losses and in explicit response to the Kremlin's nuclear brinkmanship — could well make the world much less peaceful.

Yep. Those peace deals can be very dangerous.

Just nuke 'em and ask questions later. That's the peaceful way to go.

Now, it’s “dangerous” to try to negotiate a peace settlement instead of continually escalating the military stakes and blowing up more and more cities and risking nuclear war? BI can drop dead.

Ukraine has become a bottomless pit for US weapons and money. It is hurting our national security.

I don’t like Putin.

I don’t like Zelensky.

I don’t like this war.

I don’t like our government sending billions of dollars for a purpose that no one understands.

What makes Pavel a “nuclear expert”?

I hid under my desk in grade school, the NYT published a graphic of the 100 megaton bomb over NYC on the front page, and the State gave us a briefing about what to do if both of our parents were dead.

I’m a damn expert, too.

Putin mentioned it a couple times, Biden and Zelensky rattle on with their media mouthpieces about it all the time.

Time to end this and negotiate peace.

That is up to the Ukrainians, if they want to talk surrender terms, then they will.

Anyone who can’t follow the simple logic that this gentleman is talking about just doesn’t have a head for strategy, I’m afraid.

The media keeps pushing the impending likelihood of a nuclear war for sensationalism sake when actually, the energy crisis and its impact on Western economies is more a motivation to move towards a negotiated peace than the unlikelihood of Putin letting the dogs out, especially when this is not a existential defensive war on Russia’s part

Absolutely!

Now lets get back to spending our way out of the Trump Inflation and fixing the supply chain so that our arms shipments aren't delayed.
