Putin: We're imposing martial law in those Ukrainian areas we "liberated," or something
Hot Air ^ | October 19, 2022 | Ed Morrisey

How well have the people of the four annexed territories in Ukraine embraced their new overlords in Moscow? Vladimir Putin offered some insight into that question today by declaring martial law in all four areas, starting tomorrow. The Duma followed up his declaration with legislation that will silence any dissent and criminalize any travel and public gatherings not expressly approved by military commanders.

It’s “liberation, Kremlin style,” comrade!

(snip)

The glorious war progresses smoothly, tovarisch. Don’t forget that Putin’s argument for annexation was that these areas rightly belonged to Russia in the first place. If that’s the case, why do these annexed territories need to get treated any differently than their Russian counterparts? Martial law makes this look much more like an occupation than a liberation.

Not only that, but Putin held plebiscites in which he claimed that more than 90% of the residents wanted annexation. If that’s the case, why impose restrictions on speech, public gatherings, and travel in those areas? After all, these orders apply to the entirety of the four annexed areas, not just those areas where active combat is either taking place or is in close proximity. The takeaway here is that the Russians fear the local populaces, rather than trust that they see Russians as comrades, in or out of arms.

Helluva liberation you’ve got there, Vlad.

Update on Russian military operations against Ukraine for October 19, 2022

- Russian missile and drone strikes continue for over a week, knocking out much of Ukraine's electric grid;
- Ukraine is wasting precious small arms ammunition in failed attempts to counter Russian Geran-2 drones;
- NATO claims it will send means to counter them - nothing of substance actually revealed;
- Russian forces continue to advance in Bakhmut, indicating Ukrainian forces are stretched too thin;
- Russian General Surovikin is focused on the defense of Kherson which is being evacuated;
- Fighting may reach the city, Russia has in the past withdrawn forces rather than have them destroyed or captured;
- Whatever gains Ukraine makes will be temporary - Kiev is trading its entire army for territory hoping for a political resolution in its favor ahead of a military resolution in Russia's;

Imposing martial law in those areas is simply acknowledging reality. Whether Putin imposes it or not those areas are at war anyway

Locals there in the affected area seem to think that they will be ‘herded’ over to the Russian border and given some type of residence. It just seems to me that this is the point where he (after they vacate) uses some nuke...making a demonstration of things.

Trump should have done the same during the summer riots.

I’m enjoying watching the absolute delusion of some people claiming Russia is winning as their invasion of Ukraine continues to collapse.

“It’s a strategic retreat”.
“They are intentionally abandoning equipment to the Ukrainian military”.
“Buying low tech weapons from the terror state of Iran is a sign of strength”.
“Declaring martial law proves Russia is winning”.
“The Russians are abandoning a city they fought months to capture to lure Ukraine into thinking its winning”.
“It’s totally normal to fire all your top military leaders on a monthly basis in a successful military campaign”
“Calling up 300,000 unprepared reservists to fill gaping holes 9 months into a ‘special military operation’ that was supposed to only take a few weeks was always part of the plan”
“It’s totally normal that an invaded country with 1/4 the size military of the invader is able to regularly strike cities and strategic targets inside the invading country months after the start of the invasion.”
“Launching drone strikes because it has been impossible to gain air superiority is a sign of Russia’s strength.”
“Top Russian military and civil leaders saying they’ve taken terrible loses and their current status is very tense is code for ‘everything is going according to our brilliant plan’”

The list goes on and on. People who think Russia is winning this debacle are like the morons still driving around alone in cars with a mask on. At this point, shear entertainment.

Seems the war cheerleaders forgot Putin’s statement, “ we haven’t even started yet”, laughed at and discounted- until 7 days ago when he sent a warning ( reminder) with some cheap drones that are shutting down Ukraine’s electrical grid, no internet, no banking, no phones, no heat, no water, etc….do realize he has the means to shut down their entire grid at will.

Now up to 35 percent loss, then 40, then 50, then 75 percent…..then 100 percent…..and the West can do nothing to stop it. Hope Vlad remains restrained. It would be a shame his screw tightening goes full bore when winter hits.

Let us not forget the Ukrainian army murdered nearly 18,000 ethnic Russians in these territories since 2014.

Martial Law is standard operations to further secure an area and protect citizens.

How about another:

“Get back with us in a week or two, Up to this point, not one Ukie “ offensive “ has succeeded in holding any ground…they simply have no sustainability.

You got me with that one - spit my drink out laughing.

Putin is such a clown - A GAY Clown. The folks in Kazan's office can appreciate what a clown he has made them to be.

Can't wait to see fat Surovikin all made up like a Gay Clown, but Russian Commanding Generals in Ukraine don't last long enough. At least Surovikin got the mini Me meme, but that was unavoidable, given the uncanny resemblance.

Well, one month says little in what can be a years long , or longer war. What comes immediately to mind, the “Ukrainian” Russian provinces are now a part of the Russian Federation. A game changer.

I still see no sustainability, in fact, just more suffering for the Ukrainian people. In another month, Ukraine may go from 35 percent dark, to 50? 75? One thing for sure, Vlad ( as stated a few weeks ago) is just starting to take his gloves off.

Time will tell, but I still see Vlad holding all the cards…you can get back with us in another month.Good to see some are still following this regional conflict.
