Putin's War, Week 36. Russian Mobilization Ends, Ukrainian Commandos Strike Deep Inside Russia, and What the Heck Is Happening In Kherson?
Red State ^ | November 5, 2022 | Streiff

Welcome to my newest update on Putin’s War in Ukraine. We are now 36 weeks — 254 days — since Russia launched an unprovoked attack on Ukraine. My last update can be found at Putin’s War, Week 35. The Lull Before the Next Storm. There has been some action, but the crappy weather has slowed things down. Also, both sides are somewhat tired after a punishing summer’s campaigning. I look at this period as the break when the fighters have returned to their corners.

Two significant items have been covered outside this update. First, the Pentagon is beefing up the number of weapons inspectors to ensure that weapons allocated to the Ukrainian Army end up there. Naturally, the folks who have been cheering Putin are claiming that this is a nefarious first step towards the US military fighting Russia a la Kennedy’s Special Forces advisors in South Vietnam. I think that is bullsh**, YMMV. If you’re interested, read more at The Pentagon Sends Weapons Security Inspectors to Ukraine; if You Thought Those Opposing Aid to Ukraine Were Happy, Think Again.

The second item is that after Ukraine launched an air-sea drone attack on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet at anchor in Sevastopol (Ukraine Carries out Extensive Drone Attack on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet Sevastopol Homeport), Putin declared that Russia was leaving the agreement that allowed Ukrainian grain to be shipped out of the war zone. By Wednesday, he’d backed down (Vladimir Putin Rejoins Ukraine Grain Deal After He Finds No One Cared That He Left).

It’s over. Russia got everything they wanted, and they only used the C-team.

The Russian Army continues with nearly daily assaults in the Bakhmut, Avdivika, and Marinka areas. The frontline remains unchanged. There has been a lot of huffing and puffing on the “tankie” (pro-Russian accounts that follow the war) about Russian gains in those areas. Here are the situation maps from today and two weeks ago via the Institute for the Study of War. Compare the front lines for yourself.

Russia didn’t want this war.

Putin wanted this war.

Putin’s goal o a vassal state has failed spectacularly.

His subsequent goal of grabbing left bank Ukraine and the black sea coast also failed spectacularly.

Then his sim to grab kharkiv failed.

Now he’s being pushed back in the south and east.

He has failed in getting any goals in Ukraine. However Putin’s goal of destroying Russia is continuing apace

Kyiv Planning for Total Evacuation if It Loses Electricity
NY Times ^ | November 5, 2022 | Marc Santora and Ben Hubbard

Posted on 11/5/2022, 7:58:03 PM by McGruff

As they struggle to maintain an electricity grid heavily damaged by Russian missiles, officials in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, say they have begun planning for a once unthinkable possibility: a complete blackout that would require the evacuation of the city’s approximately three million remaining residents.

The situation is already so dire, with 40 percent of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure damaged or destroyed, that municipal workers are setting up 1,000 heating shelters that can double as bunkers while engineers try to fix bombed-out power stations without the needed equipment.

To try to keep the grid from failing altogether, Ukraine’s national energy utility said on Saturday that it would continue to impose rolling blackouts in seven regions.

According to member of Ukraine's parliament's committee on national security and defense Fedir Venislavsky, the Russian army used Chechen (Kadyrovtsy) detachments in March 2022 as barrier troops to shoot deserters who tried to leave combat zones. In October 2022, Ukrainian intelligence published a purported phone call where a Russian soldier described both his task of killing inmates recruited from prisons by the Wagner Group if they were retreating and how he would be killed by others if he himself retreated. In November, the British defence ministry assessed that Russia was using blocking units.

How’s that 100,000 man mobilization coming along in Kyiv?

Found enough bodies roaming the streets to haul to the front yet?

Here’s an interesting question, relating to grain shipment protection:

What’s Turkey’s naval capacity in the Black Sea vs. Russia’s (or anybody else, for that matter)?

This given Russia’s losses so far.

Turkey seems extremely keen to keep those shipments going. I suspect they are very worried about further food price inflation & possible unrest.
