Russell Jacoby, Professor Emeritus, Department of History, UCLA, admits that in the late 1980s, “I argued that the conservatives should awake from their nightmare of radical scholars destroying America and relax; academic revolutionaries preoccupied themselves with their careers and perks. If they made waves, they were confined to the campus pool.”
Today he writes, “Only now do I see I got something wrong—as did my critics. … I missed something, the dawning takeover of the public sphere by campus denizens and lingo.”
Indeed, Jacoby’s December 19, 2022 article in The Tablet is titled, “The Takeover. Self-righteous professors have spawned self-righteous students and unleashed them into the public square.”
That is exactly what has happened and exactly what conservative intellectuals had feared.

Some good Roger Kimball quotes in this article. Unfortunately, we are limited to just 100 words in excerpts.

I was at Columbia University in the years Obama was there: late 70’s-early 80’s.
Higher Criticism was already dominant then on campus.
I could see then what would what would happen in the wider culture today.
The difference between then and now on campus was that then the aim was to neutralize your value system so that you could be inculcated with whatever the NY Times said was the party line. Your chief skill was the ability to divine from the NY Times just what the new party line was.

Today I would never waste my money on my college education. I’d go the route of vocational training. I went to University of Illinois Chicago and still had conservative professors. I had one Liberal Putz, his assignment was to read Playboy to expand our universe. Seriously! After I got my A, I complained to him face to face.
When I tried to post the excerpt, it said “100” words for articles from this particular source.
12 years of leftist indoctrination in the public government schools coast to coast, who produce *millions* of new leftist voters every single year, same with these universities.
Yet the ignorant think several states are turning blue because of some Californian’s moving in. Blind and stupid.
