According to tech mogul Elon Musk, for some, such as Google co-founder Larry Page, the ultimate goal of the race to build artificial intelligence is to create a “digital god,” a silicon-based lifeform that “would understand everything in the world. . . . and give you back the exact right thing instantly.” Who would have even thought about discussions concerning a “digital god” just a few years ago? Will this dream become a reality?

This is all stupid overselling of what people think AI can do. The AI is pretty stupid and these venture capitalists having invested money in it face a dilemma.
People think it is dangerous and the best counter is that it is just a dumb party trick. They obviously can’t say that truth because it lowers the value of the companies they invested in.

There are individuals who believe in it, work at creating it, and, yes, they run the world. AI is the enemy of mankind - a false God. We need to be intelligent enough to recognize the enemy for what it is so as to guard against its perniciousness.

Maybe, but what this guy means is that he wants an algorithm to be the sole source of truth (cancel every other thought) and he wants to tell the algorithm what it is allowed to say.
In short, like always, he wants to be king emperor and thinks this’ll work better than armies of purple hair lefties cancelling and reordering search results.
He doesn’t actually mean he wants the AI to be in charge of anything. That said, he may not get what he wants.
When the attempt is to rid the world of humans engaged in “customer service”, you know we have already reached the stage being set.
Freepers should read the “Hyperion Cantos.” The AI’s goes to war against different AI factions with humans in the middle. It’s Scifi but Dan Simmons is an excellent storyteller
The AI in question is Convolutional Neural Networks, which is simulating neurons and their network connections to other neurons, with weights, biases, and activation functions - it should not be underestimated. Their goal is to go beyond what the human brain is doing.
This is way beyond a party trick and is already in production applications. I frequently use ChatGPT during work. Nobody on the planet can write such a well written and concise answer to complex questions so quickly as ChatGPT - it has already surpassed us in this respect.
I’ve been developing software for over 30 years. ChatGPT caught me by surprise. If it can be done, if somebody has the motivation to do it, along with the resources to enable them - it will be done...just like the hydrogen bomb.
We are quickly approaching the question, “who can argue with AI? it is all knowing”. It can pass the Bar exam, medical exams, etc..
I have no doubt that they will succeed - at least to the point of it being a very real problem.

Seriously, this isn’t ‘coo coo’. Have you tried pushing ChatGPT? Had it analyze complex data sets? Asked it complex technical questions and discuss problems with potential solutions? I use it all the time and it astonishes me, somebody that has been developing software for over 30 years.
This isn’t ‘if then else’ programming. These neural networks, being massive and trained with massive amounts of data, are difficult to predict. These researchers are constantly surprised with the results. So by definition, they’re creating something they don’t fully understand.
I have no doubt a problem is being born.
I don’t get chills down my spine very often, like the first time I saw and heard Obama on TV, a cold chill literally zinged down my spine. Another time is when I was told I had breast cancer. I lived through that, thank the good Lord, and have survived past Obama. But now...a “digital god”? Oh good gravy we are headed down a very bad path with that one! Another cold chill down the spine....
AI has always eventually concluded that people need to become extinct.
