I saw this crap coming when I was on active duty from 85 to 94!

I docked a guy on his pros and cons because he cheated on his wife. I knew about it because I SAW IT! And I'm not talking about just heavy petting! He had sex with a chick in the room with two other Marines in the room. I was the SOG and responded to a noise complaint. When I gave him lower pros & cons, I GOT AN ARTICLE 15 for basically "besmirching the reputation of a fellow Marine". I didn't besmirch his reputation. HIS CHEATING ON HIS WIFE BESMIRCHED HIS REPUTATION! But, I was told not to use my opinions on his personal decisions for pros and cons. I told them moral fitness and individual character were two of the areas in which I had to give pros and cons - not to mention if this guy makes NCO, one of the questions on his review is very simple: "Would you want to go to combat with this Marine?" And I guarantee his PERSONAL DECISION-MAKING SKILLS will play into whether I (or anyone else) would want that man in their fox hole! If he would screw over his wife, for whom he swore to God to "forsake all others" but didn't, then what does he care about me?!?

My wife and I discussed just letting my enlistment extension end and just get out. I really did NOT want to get out, but my Article 15 was a real burr under my saddle. That was about the time I was scheduled for a 5th ankle surgery and my surgeon recommended a medical discharge due to ongoing concerns, scar tissue build-up, and lack of overall improvement. I agreed and that is how I ended my active duty status.

Another similar situation came when we male NCOs were instructed that we were no longer allowed to have one-on-one counseling or instructional reviews with female Marines. We had to have at least another Marine in the room or we had to keep the door open. I said, so when I chew her butt out for an EFF-UP, everyone needs to know about her EFF-UP? Or at least another Marine? I told my SNCO and a Warrant Officer for whom I was working, "Either we treat them as Marines or as females...you can't have it both ways!"
