US didn't even do that during the Civil War. However, Woodrow Wilson did use the Espionage Act to jail critics. Lincoln tried to suspend habeus corpus.

I guess it leads to the following question: Why prevent elections if the people agree with what you’re doing?

Answer: We have NO CLUE as to what the people there want, other than that they better be REALLY CAREFUL as to what they say in public.
