One reads: "Among the FAQs (frequently asked questions) on his website is 'What faith is George Soros?" It's answered like this: "He identifies himself as an atheist'."

Exactly. He has ancestors who were Jews. He is about as Jewish as Hitler or Stalin or Lenin (all of whom have been credited with having Jewish ancestors.
