Helping Armed Heroes Get Stronger

I recently observed a class for armed defenders in Colorado schools. These defenders put themselves between a murderer and our kids. There are obvious parallels between strength training and self-defense training. In both cases, we make the most progress when we face the right amount of resistance and risk failure.

This is what I saw.

Isn't the whole point of firearms that you don't have to be built like the hulk?

If you're strong enough to pull a trigger and generally ambulant that should suffice.

Weapon retention could be an issue.

They aren’t heroes yet. We need to quit devaluing that word. I mean, they were already heroes because of being teachers in covid. So now they are hero heroes. And if one of them shots a school shooting are they a hero hero hero? And if their spouse is in the medical field, they are hero hero heroes, married to a hero!

They are doing their job.

It may not be about fighting off attackers.
Imagine if this was a school campus or a kids baseball game as you're pulling up in the parking lot.

Raw bodycam from the shooting at the Allen Premium Outlets mall:
Allen, TX Bodycam
Warning: Video is blurred out. But it's pretty intense.

Having a firearm and knowing how to use it is a good start, but don't you want every advantage you can get?

I should add, I have been an NRA instructor for 23 years, an NRA instructor Training Counselor for 5 years. I trained at Front Sight for over 10 years, and a few other schools in between. Was expert pistol/rifle when in the Navy.

Able Shepherd is by far the best protector level training you can get as a civilian, and it is better than most LEO training, on par with SWAT level skills. The program has good relations with many of the local sheriffs and are actually influencing some in how they approach active shooter situations now that ‘good guys with guns’ are often on scene before LEO’s arrive.

The training is not just shooting skills. Its decision making under stress, tactics, individual and team movements, deconfliction, etc.

And guess what? The training team and founders are all strong Christians.

Well, if they get that close, you should've brought a bigger magazine or spent more time on the range. 😁

Look back to WWII or Vietnam...soldiers were tough but not muscled up like they often are today, in fact, many were pretty skinny. Muscle bulk = needs a whole lot of calories to keep going every day.

OK, not a wartime scenario here, but my point is that if you're fit and armed, you don't need muscle bulk. Or you're doing it wrong.

That video is pretty intense, but in the end some other officer put the shooter down first. Anticlimax.

The bodycam-officer started hyperventilating around the 1:30 mark. Brave moving forward, no doubt, but he didn’t need more muscle, he needed to keep the adrenaline in check. Not easy - or possible - to do, not calling any fault on that.

More muscle is almost never the answer, see my previous response in this thread.

I was thinking primarily of a school scenario, where a kid just takes a gun from an unsuspecting teacher. The school staff pictured at the link are not particularly large females. Some of the video I’ve seen of inner city yoots throwing teachers around like ragdolls don’t inspire confidence in armed teachers. An active shooter from outside would be a different matter. Even in that case, if it’s an offensive rifle vs a defensive handgun. I would expect a teacher to shelter in place, and wait for the shooter to try breaching that space...a very close scenario.

True, I’ve seen some videos of students slamming teachers around as well. One of those disarming the gun-carrier and then starting a shooting spree might be a bit way out there in “if” land though, IMO. Or the one with the gun shooting the agressive student for bashing a teacher.

But in the end, stronger is better than weaker. No doubt about that.
