As an aside, we have all witnessed Freepers right here at good old FR say that physics is settled science...so it doesn't look like we're much different than those "scientifically-minded" critics of yesteryear.;-)

Another example was Oppenheimer’s fear about testing the first atomic bomb. He (and many other leading scientists of the day) were totally convinced that one above ground nuclear explosion would destroy the entire atmosphere of the planet. That is what their equations told them.
In retrospect it was crazy to take the chance....but we got lucky.
