DeSantis would never have been the VP pick. If they ran together then the electoral college delegates from Florida would not have been able to vote for both of them (as per the Constitution). There is no way they would have risked that.

If DeSantis expects to win any primaries, the last thing he needs to do is make statements endorsing the results of the 2020 election. The Trump supporters are a majority of GOP primary voters, who believe the 2020 election was illegitimate. No equivocation is acceptable to Trump supporters. This is DeSantis’ equivalent of George Romney's “brainwashing” comment or Gary Hart's challenge on his marital faithfulness. I think the GOP oligarchs will look for another champion, perhaps Glenn Youngkin.
