Antarctica endured its coldest-ever ‘coreless winter’ (April-Sept) in 2021, then shivered through practically all of 2022, posting colder-than-average month after colder-than-average month, including the coldest November since 1987 and the latest -60C (-76F) on record — with the year culminating in the South Pole Station averaging just -49.5C (-51.7F); -0.4C below the norm.
The historic chill has spilled into 2023, too.
Back in March, the Antarctic continent suffered its coldest ever reading so early into a year; in July it logged Earth’s lowest temperature since 2017; and now, in mid-August, it’s breaking multiple all-time cold records at stations across the continent.
These include:
The -61.1C (-78F) at the Vito AWS, located on the Ross Ice Shelf, which broke its previous all-time minimum record of -60.6C (-77.1F) set in August 22, 2008; the -59.9C (75.8F) at Willie Field, located at Ross Island Vicinity, which bested the old benchmark of -56.9C (-70.4F) from August 7, 2001; and the -56.7C (70.1F) at Lorne, also sited on Ross Island, which felled the -54.9C (-66.8F) set on July 17, 2010.

Winter is Cold
It’s climate change causing this. Record highs. Record lows. It’s all climate change. Personally, I won’t be satisfied until it’s sunny and 72 everyday and crisp, clear and 52 every night. When that happens we will know that climate change is over.
Those numbers have to be averaged together with the high ones. The climate wackos always ignore the low temps.
You can’t declare historic highs and lows within such a short time span...they’re used to compute averages...in fact...the old rule was...throw out the highest and the lowest...and then compute the average.
Yup! Summer hot! Winter cold! Follow the science. Say, anyone seen my Yosemite glacier? Oh, duh. I forgot. SUV melt or something.......
Not so hot summer here mostly cool and RAIN
“R.E.C.O.R.D.E.D!”. Anything prior————dismissed.
Actually, this is probably really part of the “climate change”.
There has been always imbalance between North and South Hemisphere as far as weather/climate goes.
If is hot North, it is cold South and vice versa.
For the so called “climate scientists” alarmist, they do not take Southern Hemisphere into account too much, simply because there are few weather stations there. So, since they know better, they simply ignore it, mostly.
There is also real imbalance.
The Earth Northern Hemisphere is almost 50-50 ocean and dry land. There is less than 20% of dry land down under.
The dry land tends to influence climate a lot more than oceans. So the variation of irradiation of different hemispheres tend to highly influence Earth climate (Milankovitch). Together with Solar flux variation, the North/South imbalance are the real culprit of climate change!
But explain it to Brandon and his crowd!
Joe Bastardi, a climate change skeptic would say ‘I told you so.’ The sea ice is also likely setting records. His Saturday Summary will likely mention this event. I like Joe, he’s old school, taught by his meteorologist father who believed the past is prologue when it comes to weather forecasting.
Its because the planet is warming all the cold is forced up there. Simple.
Somehow I have lost faith in all climate and weather statistics.
But an exceptionally cold winter is caused by global warming.
Also, an exceptionally warm winter caused by global warming.
I don’t take the so-call d climate scientists seriously because there are so few weather stations in the northern hemisphere, and of the weather stations that do exist use different equipment with different accuracies. They compare readings to historic weather station readings with even greater inaccuracies. In order to go back further than recorded measurements they use proxies that are even more inaccurate.
But I agree, there’s climate change since the earth has existed. We are in a warming trend in the last 400 years. During that time humans have flourished. The population has exploded. Lifespans have increased. Most starvation has been eliminated. Deaths related to natural disasters are significantly down. Man is richer and more prosperous than anytime in recorded history. That’s what happens when it gets warm.
The thinning hair on top of my head, and the luxurious growth of my beard are also caused by global warming.
Globull warming gave me the crabs.
Would you believe nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, and diarrhea?
Well, Son of a Jill!
It is winter in the southern hemisphere. If my teachers, back in the Dark Ages of the 1950s were right, winter is when cold weather temperature records are broken
It just sounds like you ate at Taco Bell.
