My friend, whose late husband was a gun collector, wants to sell this, and I am trying to identify what kind of gun it is and what it could be worth. Thought some of you knowledgeable freepers could help.

You can’t link to the pic on facebook directly because it’s shared with a limited group. You’d have to download it, post it on some image hosting site like imgur and then post the link or picture from that hosting site here.

Get the type (rifle, shotgun, handgun). Get the manufacturer name and model number. That's a starting point to looking up a "blue book" value. The actual value will depend on condition. An NIB (new in the box), never fired will command the highest price. If not NIB, then evaluation of the wear and tear will influence the value. A good FFL (gun dealer) may be able to provide some of that input to determine a fair value. A dealer will only offer on the low end as they intend to mark it up to derive a profit from the resale.

A rough guestimate of market value can be obtained by seeking to purchase the same firearm on gun broker or similar to get a current asking price.

It’s likely a 1848 Walker Dragoon in NIB condition. If so they are not worth much, but I would offer $100 to take it off his hands.
🧐

Bring it to a gun shop or a range.

Some kind of muzzleloading shotgun. Probably not worth a whole lot

Looks like an old double barrel shotgun. Need to get more info from it. It would have date and make and other stamps on it. Some of those are worth thousands depending on what it is exactly.

Really need more from it.

Old black powder shotgun. Wall hanger. You have to find a collector of antique shotguns to get an accurate valuation. Antique Road Show maybe?

It is not muzzle loader. Those are firing pins not cap nipples. It is break breach. It is obviously from the transition period where muzzle loaders became cartridge cambered barrels. This could be extremely valuable, we need more info off the firearm.

It’s a ultra super dangerous assault rifle shooting 60 glocks per second from extended dumdum clips. Best to sell it to a trusted democrat “BUY BACK” program to save the children...

Nice.

Unfortunately I can’t identify that for you. Best I can say is focus on that marking that looks like a stag with some writing on the bottom... that’s a manufacturer’s mark and if you can figure out what the writing says you will probably be able to find information on who made the gun on the internet pretty easily I think.
