Carbon-14 dating depends on the specific ratio of carbon isotopes in the earths atmosphere. The carbon-14 is produced by cosmic ray interaction with earth’s atmospheric nitrogen. Once it has been absorbed into organic material from the atmosphere it then decays, allowing the calculation of age.
