THE COMPLEAT DEMOCRAT
Power Line ^ | 3 Oct 2023 | Scott Johnson

You can see why California Governor Gavin Newsom had to go beyond California to find a fitting replacement for the late Dianne Feinstein in the United States Senate. He put a lot of thought into it. He conducted an extensive search. Before Feinstein’s body was cold, Newsom was ready with his announcement. He had found the compleat Democrat: Laphonza Butler of Silver Spring, Maryland.

It’s almost funny. But consider, to borrow a Shakespearean formulation, she is the perfectest herald of joy, Democrat style. She combines identity politics and ideological rectitude with institutional networking. Let us pause to admire her perfection.

She’s black.

She’s homosexual.

She will be the “first openly L.G.B.T.Q.” (plus or minus one) “senator from the state,” as the New York Times stretches to put it.

She’s married.

She is an ardent evangelist of the Democrats’ abortion creed. Indeed, as president of EMILY’s List, she is a high priestess of the faith.

A former Regent of the University of California, she has one foot in the left’s higher education bastion.

She has served stints in corporate America.

She has wisdom sufficient to have served as an advisor to Kamala Harris’s 2020 crash-and burn-presidential campaign.

This announcement came so quickly.

Was Dianne Feinstein sicker than publicly reported? And so Gavin had his selection ready to go, even before she died? He knew this was coming, and publicly we were in the dark about her health?

Doesn’t it seem odd, that this Maryland woman is officially sworn in, even before Feinstein’s funeral?

What is says by Newsom is that not one black woman in the State of California is qualified to be Senator. Not Barbara Lee the long-term congresswoman, not Karen Bass the LA Mayor, not even Maxine Waters, who has been in Congress for eons, not any of the million or so black women in the State of California who actually live there. No, Newsom had to go to Silver Spring, Maryland which should infuriate the women from his own state. Not that I particularly care; I’m sure that his choice will be just as far left as they are in their politics; but it is a really odd commentary on Newsom’s thought process, if he has one.

I looked up the word “compleat” in case I had never come across it before. Did the author mean “complete”? If so, that’s sad. If it’s a play on words of some sort, I missed the joke.

The woman is an embarrassment to America, as are those who support her.

It’s an archaic form of complete. I think he’s just being “literary” like the old book “The Compleat Angler”
The definition is the same.

Compleat is an anachronistic Brit (Olde English) spelling of the word. The word is legit, the replacement Senator is not.

The author is a lawyer from Minnesota. What a weird, affected spelling. I bet he spells it “colour” instead of color.

It may be a reference to The Compleat Strategist, a very famous game store (board games, card games, role-playing games (e.g. Dungeons and Dragons) in NYC.

Not sure what the connection might be, but that is the only place I've ever seen the word "Compleat" used.

Rats put identity politics above all else.

I bet the well being of the USA and its citizens isn’t even on their list of priorities.

Somewhat archaic perhaps, but it is used, based on Izaak Walton's "The Complaet Angler", meaning highly skilled. The word is in my Random House College Dictionary.

It’s correct. It’s “vintage”.

There was also one (game store) in Falls Church, Virginia. I don’t know if it’s still there.
