I was more interested by your use of the term “autists”. ...Is that some new term combining the words autistic and artists? Is it meant as a lighthearted way to say there is usually a bit of autism in every artist?Excellent deduction. I think "autist" means a high-functioning autistic spectrum or Asperger's Syndrome individual who has found his or her groove and uses the disablity to an advantage, such as the many detail-oriented autistic people in research and IT. Beginning in 2001, Wired magazine has published quite a few articles about spectrum folks in IT, noting early on the phenomenon of two highly-educated hetero mates having a greater incidence of spectrum kids.
Social behaviors may be a little weird, but the talents of having a vast memory, acute pattern recognition and systems thinking are very useful in high-functioning autists.
The term is also loosely used for people who become deeply fascinated by a given topic almost to the point of obsession, like baseball stats or historic dates, and they use the term to refer self-deprecatingly to that one behavior even though they are not diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum.

The term seems to have originated in 1922.
Per Merriam Webster, autist means “a person affected with autism”.
