A proposed New York State law would require fingerprints and a background check before a person could purchase a 3D printer because of fears of 3D-printed firearms.

The bill, AB A8132, would require anyone purchasing a 3D printer capable of printing a firearm or firearm parts to submit fingerprints and be submitted to the Division of Criminal Justice Services for a criminal background check. Anyone who is prohibited from owning firearms would not be allowed to buy a 3D printer. Although the proposed law specifically mentions only regulating 3D printers and computers capable of printing guns and gun parts, all 3D printers can produce these items.

The bill also gives the Division of Criminal Justice Services 15 days to perform a background check and approve the sale of the 3D printer.

By that “logic”, background checks should be required to buy a drill press, lathe, milling / CNC machine, aluminum or carbon steel blocks. The Japanese prime minister Abe was shot with a homemade gun constructed of common items purchased at a hardware store. Background checks at Home Depot?

And before long we’ll hear complaints about a garage sale loophole where you can buy a 3D printer and skip the background check. /s

This proposed law is incredibly stupid.

Criminals don't sit around figuring out how to print plastic guns.

Hindering law abiding citizens is ass backwards, but that's par for the course. In their overzealous attempts to keep guns out of citizens hands, they've come to the point of absurdity that is simply breathtaking.

Just as you pointed out, you can build a rudimentary firearm with odds and ends picked up at your local hardware store and those things are perfectly legal. Same with a 3D printer, you can basically buy all the components individually and download code that isn't too difficult to adjust, and you have yourself a 3D printer.

If someone starts a rumor that Electric Vehicles can be modified into an automatic weapon, true or not, the left will immediately scream for EV’s to either be abandoned and never spoken of again, or you will need a background check to purchase one.

All of this to control everyone with as few people as possible doing the controlling.

Insanity.

“Laws” created by liberals always sound like a good idea until someone has to enforce them.

no. They would call it a "conspiracy theory" and shut down the "rumors". Look how they treat the FACT that windmills are really bad for birds.

not necessarily. if the rumor was that right wing extremists were parking ev’s in unsuspecting garages in order to start fires...that could work.

First, don’t give them ideas, it will confuse them.
Second, I would not trust a 3d printed gun, unless it was sintered nickel, but if you have 30k+ for metal 3d printing you would probably get a real gun.
third, see number one again.
I remember seeing a zip gun in the 60’s, made from a piece of wood, a car antennas tube , a nail, and a clothespin. shot 22 no problem.
