Secession belongs to a different class of remedies. It is to be justified upon the basis that the States are Sovereign. There was a time when none denied it. I hope the time may come again, when a better comprehension of the theory of our Government, and the inalienable rights of the people of the States, will prevent any one from denying that each State is a Sovereign, and thus may reclaim the grants which it has made to any agent whomsoever.

The states are sovereign.
States may attempt to secede.
The other states may attempt to say nope.
If the attempting secession state(s) are successful, they will secede.
Both sides have interests. Both sides have reasons. Some reasons are better than others.

The Union was founded by agreement of all the States. The Union is older than the Constitution. The Unired States is and always has been a Nation, and both the Articles of Confederation and Constitution forbid Secession. If old Andrew Jackson has been President in 1861, the war would have been over in a few months.
