Google to warn users they can be tracked while in Chrome's 'Incognito' mode

Google's Chrome web browser will soon include a warning that "private" browsing does not prevent users from being tracked, a move that comes months after Google settled a related privacy lawsuit.

In December, Google settled a $5 billion privacy lawsuit, which alleged that it spied on people who used Chrome's private browsing — or 'Incognito' — mode.

A pre-release version of the browser has been found to include an updated privacy warning that addresses a key piece of evidence in the settled lawsuit — that users "overestimate" the privacy protection features in Chrome.

When the change is rolled out, users will be warned that private browsing "won't change how data is collected by websites you visit and the services they use, including Google".

Key points:

A pre-release version of the browser includes an updated privacy warning

The change is likely be rolled out to users in the next couple of months

The lawsuit claimed that Google collected and sold browsing data from private browsing sessions

Interesting. Changes don’t get you privacy, but you do get a warning.

Time to take up fishing…

Why would anyone use Google Chrome?

If you want a Chrome based browser, there are many alternatives. Brave and Comodo Dragon, to name two.

I can’t believe anyone thought otherwise. All incognito mode does is not store the sites visited in your history. The info is still there.

I watched one of those pedophile sting videos a few days ago. The perp thought by using incognito mode that law enforcement couldn’t track the sites he visited or retrieve the private messages sent to the victim.

Google is way, way out of control.

Your privacy rights mean nothing to them.

Anyone who has been paying attention for the last 20 years or so already knows that the primary reason for Google’s existence it to track you,

The reason google still tracks you is because of the sensors on the phone. I am listing a few of the many steps you can use to actually stop your phone from spying on your location, or going further to prevent messages from your car, etc. There is a sensor that detects any movement or one that detects sound nearby or from your phone - which other phones actively look for to help locate you on the network. Some sensors on/off require you to go into different Apps to change settings. Remember the first steps listed below are just to get you headed in the right direction.

To access Advanced Settings on your Android device, you first need to enable Developer Options. To do this, go to your phone’s “Settings,” scroll down to “About phone,” and tap on “Build number” seven (7) times. You’ll then be prompted to enter your device’s PIN or unlock pattern to enable Developer Options.

After your Developer Options is enabled, go back to the main “Settings” menu, look for “Developer options” and tap on it. In the Developer Options menu, locate “Quick Settings Developer Tiles” and tap on it. search for “Sensors Off.” This feature allows you to disable all sensors on your Android phone with a single toggle. Once you find it, tap on the toggle switch next to “Sensors Off” to enable this function. YOU CANNOT JUST STOP WITH THIS STEP. THERE ARE QUITE A FEW MORE STEPS SO GOOGLE A LIST OF THEM OR YOUTUBE VIDEOS ON THE SUBJECT.

Turning off sensors may affect the performance of certain apps or features that rely on sensor data. If you encounter any issues, simply revisit the Quick Settings Developer Tiles and toggle the “Sensors Off” switch to its original position.

REMEMBER: There are more steps to do, so you cannot just here. You need to spend another 30 minutes or so to re-enable some features like the camera, or phone, but you will need to google OR YOUTUBE the rest of them.

I applaud your efforts, but people should know that all of these settings are entirely software. The menus may remember how you set the “switches”, but that can have absolutely no bearing on how the software behaves.

In the initial days of WiFi, people and companies were uncertain of FAA requirements and most laptops had a physical switch that disabled the WiFi. Those days are gone, and now your device has multiple cameras, a gps locator, microphone(s), Bluetooth and WiFi. All of which are fully under control of your (likely Chinese) OS.

RFID bags are pretty cheap.

Chromium is infinitely better than chrome, but still leaks info. if you sign into google in chromium, it will download the google spyware in the background and essentially becomes chrome. Chrome is surveillance ware. This is the greatest surveie tool ever designed and people joyfully and gladly give all their info to google. The best you can probably do is Firefox, turn off their error monitoring and other system monitoring, install UBlock Origin and Privacy Badger.

We soon will be forced to have VPN.

NOrd VPN is pretty good.

One can always run Tor Browser. That drives some social media platforms crazy, their tracking algorithim freaks out.. Facebook goes all woggly when I log on with Tor, even aftr I verify my ID. Believe me....they WANT to track you.
