Mom always said that we probably had some Black Irish too, so I guess I’ll have to make my own circle

Black Irish - Black Irish

Folklore

The term “black Irish” refers to persons of Irish descent who are supposed to be descendants of the Spanish Armada, which sailed around the middle of the 15th century, and had dark hair and or eyes. The term is used among people of Irish descent and sometimes confuses people since it doesn’t refer to dark skin color.

I was told I have Black-Dutch. Took me years to find out that it stood for Cherokee.
(I already knew that my great-grandmother was Cherokee, but I couldn’t figure out what the Black-Dutch was. Don’t know why they separated it into 2 names.)
So, Irish and Cherokee.

My mom said me the same story to explain her black hair and blue eyes. After doing genealogy for over 25 years, I realize any Spanish DNA the Irish may have acquired from the wrecked armada story pretty much disappeared 300 yrs ago.
