Sunspot 15 times Larger than Earth to Trigger Solar Flares and Destroy Grid, Scientists Warn

The Sun’s surface is currently on overdrive as the Earth enters a period of high cosmic activity, with a major new threat discovered in the form of an enormous sunspot visible from the surface of Mars.

While sunspots are not usually a cause for concern, scientists warn that the gargantuan sunspot group AR3576, which measures over 124,274 miles, could trigger powerful solar flares and wreak havoc on the Earth.

Sunspots, which appear as dark holes on the Sun’s surface, are known to be so disruptive they can trigger coronal mass ejections (CMEs) – large plasma and magnetic releases from the Sun.

This is most amusing. Disswire was created 14 December 2023, so it's 'still in diapers.' Most interesting is that it is a GoDaddy domain which set up its privacy via a company in Iceland.

Its bottom banner tells that it is a part of Red Lipton Media. Interestingly, a quick search shows no "Red Lipton Media," but there is a UK-based Lipton Media. That is NOT Red Lipton Media. The Disswire web site seeks donations, but interestingly does not reveal exactly to what entity the donation goes. Their "donation" is being funneled through the third party, Donorbox, so....

Seems like just another "support us" "news" site with some articles drawing material from other news sites. Such is today's game, it seems.

.24 hr Summary...
Solar activity reached high levels due to a X3.3 flare at 09/1314 UTC
from old Region 3575 (S37, L=178) from just beyond the SW limb.
Associated with this event was a 1,000 sfu Tenflare, a Type IV radio
sweep and a partial-halo CME off the SW limb beginning at 09/1325 UTC.
The CME is not expected to have any Earth-directed component given its
position beyond the SW limb.

At 10/0354 UTC, a long-duration M3.4 flare was observed from a region
beyond the ESE limb. A partial-halo CME was observed off the SE limb
beginning at 10/0336 UTC. The CME is not expected to have any
Earth-directed component given its position beyond the SE limb. Region
3576 (S16W02, Fkc/beta-gamma-delta) produced two M-class flares; an M1.2
at 09/1800 UTC and an M1.5/Sf at 10/0051 UTC. New Region 3582 (N06E21,
Cro/beta) was numbered. The remainder of the disk was uneventful.

A filament eruption centered near S37W02 beginning at 08/2000 UTC was
reanalyzed. A likely associated CME was observed off the S limb at
09/0154 UTC in SOHO/LASCO C3 imagery. Modelling results indicated the
potential for a grazing blow mid to late on 12 Feb.

Solar activity is likely to reach moderate levels (R1-R2/Minor-Moderate)
with a chance for X-class flares (R3/Strong) on 10 Feb. On 11-12 Feb,
solar activity is expected to be low with a chance for M-class flares.

Energetic Particles

.24 hr Summary...
The greater than 10 MeV proton flux began to increase at 09/1400 UTC
following the X3.3 flare. S1 (Minor) levels were reached at 09/1530 UTC
and S2 (Moderate) levels were reached at 09/1815 UTC. The maximum 10 MeV
flux reached 187 pfu at 09/2355 UTC. The 100 MeV flux increased as well
and reached a maximum of 0.698 pfu at 09/2330 UTC.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux was at normal to moderate levels.

.Forecast...
The greater than 10 MeV proton flux is expected to persist at S1-S2
(Minor-Moderate) levels through 10 Feb. S1 levels are likely to continue
on 11 Feb, followed by a chance for S1 levels on 12 Feb.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux is expected to be at normal to
moderate levels through 12 Feb.

Solar Wind

.24 hr Summary...
Solar wind speed was in decline after midday from approximately 505 km/s
to near 400 km/s. Total field increased late in the period from 3 nT to
7 nT. The Bz component was between +6/-5 nT. At 09/2147 UTC, a weak
shock was observed. Total field increased from 7 nT to 9 nT while the
solar wind increased from 395 km/s to 500 km/s.

Glancing influence from the 06 Feb CME will likely influence solar wind
parameters on 10 Feb. Another grazing influence is possible mid to
late on 12 Feb from the 08 Feb CME.

Geospace

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to isolated unsettled levels.

.Forecast...
Quiet to unsettled conditions are expected on 10-11 Feb due to influence
from the 06 Feb CME. Unsettled to active levels are expected on 12 Feb
due to a grazing influence from the 08 Feb CME.

The sunspot grouping - it’s several of them - is no joke. Whether or not there’s an ejection and does it move right toward the earth is, as always, a hit or miss proposition.

One of these days, we will get zapped, but good. Hope it’s not for a while yet.
