There were a great many purposes that I see, here:
1) The “performance” was WH-controlled, Internet-only - if you can do this, you can do anything.
2) It was held inside razor-wire put up at a moment’s notice - as good as red lighting with Marines in the background.
3) Our entire Federal Government was trained to enter the razor-wire like sheep entering a chute - this will come in handy, later.
4) The “performance” produced probably the only campaign footage team-Biden may have available before November - his doctors probably know the trajectory he is on, at this point.

I wish I were still teaching an online course in public communications, the way I did for a university (regionally accredited) that was forced to close by Obama's attacks on private colleges back in his day. I appreciated point number 5. It’s also the question I asked myself—why are we still doing this? When Trump becomes president again, I hope he just records it and posts it online. No pomp and circumstance, no glad handing, no stopping for applause. Seems like a much better way to handle it.
