My guess is that she is basically the living dead. She will probably never wake up, and if she does she won’t be well off.

The perp will never be charged with murder even thought that is effectively what she did.

Depends on the nature of the injuries. She's probably a vegetable. But there's a chance that it's just a lot of swelling so they had to put her in a coma.
