The VA keeps testing me I’m around 12 or 14, can’t remember exactly, they are giving me 50,000 units of D3 twice a week for 12 weeks until I have next appointment with my primary...

I take 1000 of D3 most days.

I think K2 is also important, but my diet has enough so I don’t supplement.

I think in future I might stop all supplements except magnesium (glycinate) and maybe a little zinc.

Wow...who knew?

So...how long should you stay in the sun for best results? Minutes? Hours?

Just from general reading....D3 is better absorbed by the body. Just in general, if you sit on the patio in the spring/summer for an hour...you probably get the normal dose you require. It’s the winter months that you need that ‘extra’ boost.

My doctor believes most supplements are a waste of money and has proactively pinpointed vitamin K as something I should not take.

Medical community is all over the place in these things.

I have understood that there us a ratio of D K calcium and magnesium and perhaps zinc to use these supplements optimally and prevent vein calcification.

Have not found that information

Does anyone know?

That would really depend on your geolocation and how au naturel you sat. Still hard to get enough sun in the spring to the north and most people are still fully clothed on their patios.

Also, there’s supposed to be a difference in vitamin D needs for bone health between the dark and the light pigmented:

I’m an older veteran and I take vitamin D3 every day.

I also take zinc, vitamin C and a multivitamin.

I do a Walmart brand “Male over 50” one a day - it has about everything one needs including 125% of recommended D.

above 37 degrees latitude, there’s negligible vitamin D production from November to March.

While D2 (ergocalciferol) comes from plants and fortified foods and D3 (cholecalciferol) from animal products and sunlight exposure, Dr. Holick states both forms raise and maintain vitamin D levels equally.

postmenopausal women who took 1,100 international units (IU) of vitamin D plus 1,400 to 1,500 milligrams of calcium per day reduced their risk of developing non-skin cancers by 77% after four years, compared with a placebo and the same dose of calcium. - https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/time-for-more-vitamin-d#:~:text=Except%20during%20the%20summer%20months,risk%20for%20vitamin%20D%20deficiency. At its core, vitamin D is vital for calcium absorption in the gut,

It's disappointing that this is the only citation of the role of the gut for prevention of malnutrition.

Yes: If the gut is imbalanced (dysbiosis), you can suffer the effects of malnutrition despite healthy food intake AND supplements.

Most people wouldn't require any supplementation at all if they just had healthy a healthy gut, and only those in certain latitudes require any D supplementation (mostly seasonal) beyond Sun exposure.

True story: I realized the power of the Sun during my health recovery when I worked outside for a mere 20 minutes one Spring and experienced a burst of energy which lasted a full two weeks...something which has never been replicated by taking supplements, either before or since.

He cites studies showing better absorption from skim milk, low in fat, than from full-fat milk. Hence, vitamin D can be taken with or without dietary fat.

Wish there was more information on "vitamin D" Milk (whole milk as Kroger sells it). If milk is a good source of vitamin D should we be encouraged to drink a glass a day?

I take between 10,000 - 15,000 IU per day of D3 and have been for the past 27 years. Like you, I very rarely get sick. I do believe it is a very important supplement. What most do not realize about D3 is it is more accurately described as a hormone!
