I'm reminded of a tour guide in Mexico, when touring the Mayan ruins. The guide was of Mayan ancestry. He was asked the question about what happened that left all the great cities empty. His very straightforward response was: "They got tired of the priests and lords ruling over them, killed them, and then left the cities".
Now, that might just be his take, but the only advice I can give you and your 'friends': keep on doing what you're doing. You're 80 years old, so you might not live long enough to see the consequences of what you have wrought.
