Mobster gunned down with cigar in hand
November 26, 2003 - 11:50AM
A New England mobster has been murdered in a scene out of a Hollywood gangster movie, shot dead with his cigar still in his hand after his weekly game of cards at a social club.
Adolfo 'Al' Bruno, 57, died in a hail of bullets in the car park outside the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society club in the Massachusetts town of Springfield.
Bruno, reputed to be a senior local member of the New York-based Genovese crime family, was shot in the chin, neck, elbow, cheek and groin in the ambush.
His killer called out his victim's name as he opened the door of his black 4x4 before opening fire.
Born near Naples, Bruno invariably spent Sunday evenings at home with his family before visiting the club to play briscola, an Italian card game.
He survived an assassination attempt in the same car park ten years ago. His attacker then was a barber who told police that Bruno had punched him in a quarrel over debts.
The mobster pleaded guilty to gambling offences but was acquitted of separate charges of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder. At the time of his guilty plea federal prosecutors claimed that Bruno helped run rackets for the Genovese in Connecticut.
