BEIJING (AFP) - Deprived of the Rolling Stones last year, China's rock 'n roll fans can seek solace by headbanging to Deep Purple instead.

The veteran rockers, headed by axeman Richie Blackmore, will play four concerts in China starting March 31, taking in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing and Guangzhou, the promotor said Tuesday.
Beijing's stringent Ministry of Culture once viewed rock music as "spiritual pollution," but has relaxed its position and the promotor said the ministry had given the green light for Deep Purple.
Founded in 1968, the band, best known for "Smoke on the Water", was once one of the biggest in the world.
The Stones had been due to make their long-awaited debut in China last year but cancelled twice -- once because of SARS (news - web sites) and then after claiming that organising the shows had proved too "complicated and difficult".
