I live near the New Madrid faultline. From what I have read the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812 are the most severe ones to occur in the US (exceeded 8.0 on the scale). Because the area was so remote and had such a low population at the time, there were few casualties. A similar quake today would be devastating in both property damage and personal injury.

Last week there was a mini quake in the area (2.9). Makes one wonder if there is another on the way. Those of you who are older will remember that in 1990 Iben Browning predicted a quake and gave a particular date. The schools had lower attendance, emergency services were on standby, etc. Nothing happened and it was a widely reported non-event.

The interesting thing about the 1811-12 quakes was that they were predicted by the Indian Chief Tecumseh. Its fairly well documented that he did so. Makes one wonder how he was able to do it and scientist today can't.
