Medicaid, What you should know.
Me | 9/26/04 | Hopping Mad

Did you know about the new Medicaid laws? Well my husband and I just found out. We are being sewed by Medicaid for past medical bills Medicaid paid for, when our son was born three years ago. This came to us suddenly without warning. I had an emergency C section, and our son was in the neo natl. care unit for a week. So the sum of what they want back is over nine thousand dollars. So the new house we were planning on buying is out of the question. We don't mind paying back the money so much but the fact that they gave us no warning at all, that is what makes us both so angry. Also as a bonus, they might try to force us both to buy medical insurance. Wether or not they can, being that we are married we don't know. What we do know is that they only expect the father of the insured child to pay and not the mother. I don't know about you, but I find this extremely sexist. I mean why should the father be the only one to pay? As the saying goes "it takes two to tango". We just find this whole thing extremely outrageous. We want people to know what is going on before they too get caught off garde. We also think that everyone who lives in NY state should write a letter to their local paper, and or our great Govenor. We hope this info. is helpful to you.

Am I to understand you had no prior notice for the past three years. I have to question a law suit since this cost Medicaid time and effort and would be the last effort for reimbursement..

The reason medical insurance is so high is because people like yourself think that a new home is more important than paying for the birth of your child. So you say you don't mind paying the bill. No one would be trying to sue you if you had shown what is called (good faith) meaning you had sent at least some sort of payment, even small to show good faith. Start making small payments then try buying your house.

MOre than likely they were not doing well at time they received medicaid, and now that they are medicaid wants its money back. It is like credit card companies who offer you a 7.99 % then if you miss a payment with another company you get 26% rate and demand you pay all of it now...no longer payments.

The world is changing and the greedmongers are in control. Don''t blame these people, blame the people who control the system. They probably signed a paper with medicaid that if they ever got a better income they would be willing to pay back all the claims on medicaid...happens all the time with small print. A Free lunch is never free.

I repeat, a hospital delivery and a week's stay in neonate--$9K is cheap, not a 26% gouge like the credit card cos do...

True, but you are missing the point. If we give someone in need a helping hand, do we go make them pay it back. If we don't make the children in Africa, Asia or other places we help pay America back, how do we justify making our own tax paying citizens pay back money "WE GAVE", NOT LOANED.

I guess it would depend on how the "contract" for Medicaid was entered into.

If it says in large print or in fine--repayment at a future date may be demanded , then it ought to be repaid. That way, there'll be something there for the next hard case story.

I suspect $9K is not the whole amount, but a partial repayment. A week in neo costs a lot more.

Many nonprofit hospitals will allow minimal repayment of large bills outside of Medicaid--but you have to negotiate with the hospital. It would surprise many to know of the small and regular repayments that people of modest income are made...with no threat of lawsuit to recover the whole amount. I wish more people knew of the things their hospital does for their communities...

You signed up today and you haven't responded to anything that anyone has said to you so you'll have to forgive me for questioning the veracity of your story.

I thought getting sewed is neccessary after a c-section, or do they use staples, now?

Take my statements in context please. To rip them out of context, is like taking Bible out of context, it gives impression I am contradicting myself.

Greedmongers can be those without any money, just wanting some. The love of money is root of all evil, not money in and of itself.
