And You Thought It Was Just a Silly Kids' Movie (New York Times Pervert Reviewer)
opinionjournal.com ^ | 11-12-04 | James Taranto

Posted on 11/12/2004 2:52:41 PM PST by Paul Atreides

From the New York Times' review of "The Polar Express":

Tots surely won't recognize that Santa's big entrance in front of the throngs of frenzied elves and awe-struck children directly evokes, however unconsciously, one of Hitler's Nuremberg rally entrances in Leni Riefenstahl's "Triumph of the Will." But their parents may marvel that when Santa's big red sack of toys is hoisted from factory floor to sleigh it resembles nothing so much as an airborne scrotum.

And, they are still wondering why they are termed "old media."

This Taranto fellow appears to have some "issues"...

Bizarre. I have seen a thousand pictures of Santa with a sack of toys, and I have ~never~ thought it looked like a scrotum.

Oh, for Pete's sake! The reviewer probably sees everything in these terms.

It's like the old joke: a psychiatrist is giving a patient a Rorshach (sp?) test. To the patient, every ink blot looks like something sexual. The doctor says, "You certainly have a one track mind." The patient replies: "Me? You're the one with the dirty pictures!"

It's not Taranto, it's NYT film critic Manohla Dargis:

Do You Hear Sleigh Bells? Nah, Just Tom Hanks and Some Train

Second graf.

I can't trust a review that contains the phrase "big red sack" in it.

These people need to get back on their meds.

Other gems from Dargis:

• October 22 -- A "Didactic" Anti-Michael Moore "Screed"
Movie critic Manohla Dargis takes on "Celsius 41.11", a conservative antidote to left-wing Michael Moore's "documentary": "A didactic screed that has all the verve of a PowerPoint presentation and all the subtlety of a Homeland Security red alert, 'Celsius 41.11' is finally interesting only because it represents another unconvincing effort on the part of conservatives to mount a viable critique of Mr. Moore."

• October 8 -- A "Saintly" Abortionist
Like abortion? Then you'll love "Vera Drake," Mike Leigh's new movie about an abortionist in '50s Britain: "[Actress Imelda] Staunton's physical performance keeps this saintly figure grounded and expands the character."
