NEW YORK (AP) - The Bowl Championship Series is ready to move on without The Associated Press college football poll.
"I wasn't surprised by the AP's decision," Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese said. "I don't think it's a negative issue. We're just going to have to put our heads together and come up with an alternative way of picking the teams for the 1-2 game." The Associated Press told the BCS on Tuesday to stop using its poll to determine which teams play for a national title.
BCS coordinator and Big 12 commissioner Kevin Weiberg has said the BCS hopes to have a new formula ready by April.
"We're not heading toward a playoff," Tranghese said Wednesday.
So for the second straight season and the fifth time since the system was implemented in 1998, the BCS will change the way it computes its standings.

"We certainly have other options on how to select and rank the teams," Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen said.
The BCS already was looking at the possibility of a selection committee picking the teams for the championship game, taking a page from the NCAA basketball tournaments.
--snip--
So losing the AP poll doesn't spell doom for the BCS and is not a step toward creating the playoff system the fans and a growing number of coaches want.
The university presidents have made it clear they won't sign off on a playoff system.
ABC, unhappy with the BCS's idea of adding another game with no championship ramifications, tried to push the BCS toward a playoff during contract negotiations for broadcast rights earlier this year. But the BCS simply found another suitor, happy to buy what it was selling.

and for that matter, ABC. College football needs a playoff of some sort. The BS BCS cannot continue....
All I can say is: Why give a rip?
College sports is the same as pro sports these days except the players risk career-halting injuriies without any compensation, while the universities make a bundle.
Sporting events have become WAY to important in our culture.
well like it or not, Sports are a part of our culture and it isnt going to go away anytime soon.
The players do get compensated, full ride scholarships with the chance to make millions by showing off your talents against your peers...
As long as fans fill the stands and TV networks pay to air the games, it can continue permanently. It's all about the money.
Buck the FCS...16 team I-A playoff!
It'll be OK, just do it...
I would like the ability to argue over who the best college team is, rather than have someone tell me who 1 & 2 are and make them play each other.
I like it better when Ohio State was in the Rose Bowl all the time, anyway.
Buckeye Bump!!!
O H
thats what I want...
in addition to 4 at large bids, you get all 12 1-A conference champions in as well....
Are the B12/SEC championship games booted or incorporated in? Would it be just the beginning or the end of the "Super Conferences"?
I see more Super Conferences (6 total) and basically two at large teams chosen (+6) for a total of 8 as the most logical first step short of 16 teams...with the first round, in essence, being Conference Championship Week.
Then, seed the 8 teams and the teams in the finals play (11+1+3=15) at most 15 games. You could also see #1 and #2 in the BCS get byes, then bringing in 8 more for 10 total.
The reason why I say this is because in order to get this done, the BCS Bowls have to be the centerpiece of the production still, to some degree, in the Semis and Championship Game.
Boise St., Utah and Auburn would be fun to watch in a 16-team playoff this year...can you imagine the first round home site matchups if you seeded 16 teams this year in I-A?
I think it would end the Super Conferences to a point.
But with 16 teams, the big 6 are have a 2/6 chance of getting left out for a second team.....
Dont forget Louisville too.
they are probably better than Utah and Boise ST and they took Miami to the wire. had they not put in a Freshman QB in the 4th QTR, they would have won....
Well if all you want is to talk about football rather than watch it, why do we even need teams at all? You can argue whether the '45 Army team was better than the '95 Cornhuskers, whether the '56 Sooners were better than the '74 Sooners, what have you. If we aren't going to have the teams actually play against each other and are instead just going to imagine what might have happened had the teams played, we can save a heck of a lot of money on equipment and coaches.
...no, you can't forget Louisville. And, as much as I can't stand saying it, you just never know what Cal and Texas would do as well. I was focusing on the FIVE (OU, USC, Auburn, Utah and BSU) undefeated teams in the TOP NINE.
Here's your top 16 seeds in the BCS:
1 USC (12-0)
2 Oklahoma (12-0)
3 Auburn (12-0)
4 Texas
5 California
6 Utah (11-0)
7 Georgia
8 Virginia Tech
9 Boise State (11-0)
10 Louisville
11 LSU
12 Iowa
13 Michigan
14 Miami
15 Tennessee
16 Florida State
I could see a Utah/BSU first round match up, and a whole bunch of HOT games that I'd pay to see...there's no football like playoff football! I go to the NAIA, I-AA, II and III playoffs all the time...and lots of those kids are STRICTLY PLAYING for the love of the game. It's some GREAT football.
You are correct....that would be fun to watch...
I would watch out for VT and Cal....
Texas cant seem to win a big game ever...
Michigan is an empty shell. I was at the Ohio State Michigan game. Texas will expose them in the Rose this year....
You are right. We don't need football teams anymore. All the best ones are gone.
Yeah...
i like the way Ohio State developed against Michgan :)
I kind of wonder if that phantom PI goes VT's way in the game against USC if they win that game in August....

The bad call and Adibi getting hurt...take those two things away and I think Tech could have won.
