I just had the pleasure of watching game 1 of the 1975 Red Sox - Reds World Series at Fenway.
...I was amazed to see what REAL ballplayers used to do.
Curt Gowdy, Dick Stockton and Tony Kubek were doing the TV for NBC on a rainy October day at Fenway.
Luis Tiant started for the Sox. He had not given up an earned run in the previous 24 innings including the ALCS series against Oakland or Anaheim...I forget.
He had pitched 18 COMPLETE games during this season.
Late in the game (7th, I think), he got a hit off a tough Cincy pitcher (Gullet), moved to second on a hit by Dewey Evans, went to third on Cecil Cooper's (?) hit and then scored on Denny Doyle's single to right.
He missed home plate by a toe and had to run back and tag it again.
In the dugout he looked like he was snuffing smelling salts.
NOBODY figured he'd go out to the mound again but he did.....he FINISHED THE GAME by striking out the last batter.
Talk about longing for the "old days"
Watching El Tiant run bases was one of the more humorous aspects of the '75 Series. For my money, the '75 Series was the best that I can remember (outside of 2004). '75 had everything!
I don't want to let the cat out of the bag, but ultimately the Sox lost that year.
