VANITY - Help needed with bogus stats from "Kidz-IDz"
Kidz-IDz ^ | 1-14-05 | some quoter of statistics

I have need to "verify" some statistics. A friend has forwarded me this quote from this outfit:

"Just last year alone the Department of Justice reported that more than 1 million children were reported missing. In addition to this, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) announced that 8.6 million children are reported chronically ill or seriously injured annually. Injury unfortunately is the leading cause of death amongst school-age children."

I can see what this organization is up to, but my friend doesn't have the same awareness of these kind of operations that I have.

Help, please?

"Just last year alone the Department of Justice reported that more than 1 million children were reported missing.

1 million children were reported missing and more than 95% of them were found within the first 12 hours (typically at a friend's house.) Of the remaining 5%, the vast majority are those over 16 who are in a dispute with their parents.

In addition to this, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) announced that 8.6 million children are reported chronically ill or seriously injured annually. Injury unfortunately is the leading cause of death amongst school-age children."

A chronic illness includes ADD, asthma, etc. It also includes any illness that extends beyond 6 days. Serious injuries include broken bones; it seems like every kid in the neighborhood has had a cast on in the last year.

The Kidz Idz is a cute idea, and at least they're not raking people over the coals like some of the other outfits are doing. I'm pretty sure that every state now has ID cards available for any age and typically are under $20 for about six years. The big difference between Kidz Idz and a state ID is that the state ID will have a thumb print on record, something that is vital if there really is an abduction.

Also, the photo from the ID will already be on the computers at the station and can be used for an immediate Amber alert, if needed.

Thought the DMV folks were going to fall over when we got our daughter her first ID nearly twelve years ago; she has to go in for new pictures/thumbprint in March.

I am very concerned about this Kidz-idz thing. I just now really had a chance to learn about it. My wife signed my children up without really discussing it with me.

I have not been able to find anything negative posted by anyone else on the web. What I find, is that this is an effort to put some money in someone's pocket even if they do say it is a nonprofit organization. My wife paid more than $80 to get our three children registered. I went to check out one of the links to find out more info. I was shocked and surprised that they wanted to charge my credit card to view a national listing I can get for free by going to FBI website.

My biggest worry... Who is to say that some employees of Kidz-idz do not have the potential of being a sex offender and preying on the children who have their info and photos registered. That really bothers me.

I am interested in anyones comments, please!

Thanks for the reply. Since I posted this, I'm no longer associated with the person who was infatuated with the idea.

However, I'm still concerned that it's just a bunch of @$$#01e$ out to make a buck over people's legitimate fears about their kids. And, yes, they are making a buck out of fear. Period.
