Heh.... there was a guy who posted a thread about bull riding here once... he was a lawyer and a bull rider, posting a draft of his argument in defense of bull riding, to use when fighting local ordinances that sought to restrict or ban it.

I actually argued with him, because I thought he argued too far the other way, saying the bucking strap 'tickled' and the spurs didn't hurt the bull. I thought it better to at least be honest... yes, the bull hates that stuff, that's why he bucks... but it doesn't cause injury.

Yeah, I use these when I'm doing on-lead or lungeline work. I think the horse gets a better feel for what you want. Plus, you can adjust the knots to make them fit better. Mine doesn't have the noseband like that though. I keep some of the others around though coz alot of people don't know how to tie 'em properly.

Not as heavy and bulky as the nylon or leather to carry.

If the knot is tied right, they won't come loose if the horse is straining on em. I had an old mare one time that lost her cool while tied up to a hitching rail one day. She was sitting back for all she was worth and when the buckle on the halter broke she cut a flip straight back.

She was a crazy old thing anyway.

Yeah, I get so tired of "be nice to the horsey" crap.

I swear anything you do in the way of discipline to a horse is frowned upon by so many people. If they would just take the time to understand why some discipline techniques are used, they actually figure out that it is actually saveing the horse itself from hurting themselves, let alone the person working with them.

How are you suppose to stop a 1200 lb animal from throwing itself back? Is letting a 1200 lb horse throw itself safer then trying to teach it not to do that? Is causing a little pain to a 1200 lb animal worse, less safe? (Rehtorical questions, you don't have to answer. I'm on my soap box:)

Good morning everyone, Great to see the new thread, and new picures :)

I'll have to go back and find a picture of the pony to look at her feet. I like the rope halters, nice and light weight. We have two or three head stalls that are bridle/halter combination - for the horses that are ridden endurance.

I looked up how to tie them on the internet. I can't remember now the name of that type knot, but if I can find it, I'll let you know.

The Be-Nice halter and the one CBW posted are different. The Be-Nice halter tightens, the reqular rope halter doesn't.

Yours is the most gorgeous bridle halter combo I've seen. I'd love to have one just like it. the ones at our tack shop are a crummy compromise!

They just seem harder to manage to me... and not very english, I have to admit (do I really care if my style clashes?) ... so I don't prefer them for every day.

It's weird, every now and then I'll forget how myself if I haven't used one in a while and what I have to do then is not look at it and tie it by feel. It's like my fingers know what to do and my brain doesn't. Kinda like not being able to remember somebody's phone number without going to the phone and dialing it.

I think rope halters are the best - makes a great impromptu hackamore in a pinch, especially with the reinforced nose like the one you linked to. I sometimes bareback ride with one by tying off the 12' lead rope in the middle to turn it into reins.

The "Be nice" halter and a rope halter are different. It might be hard to see in that illustration, but the "be Nice" has brass ferrules on the poll strap, that can be turned to the smooth or raised side, for more pressure. The whole halter tighten when pulled back on, cheeks, chin and poll. Very uncomfortable, but effective. I felt bad, that the gelding had a indention across his nose. That was better than him really hurting himself, or others.

Aw..thanks for pics. I remember reading that bull riding thread. He was passionate in his cause, but I agree with you about his argument.
The pony has stripe feet because of her white legs. The Arabian mare, we have is the same way.

Yeah, most of 'em have brass-plated hardware. I hate that! It rusts. I like nylon or bio-thane for all my tack except the saddle coz you can just hose it off and hang it up and it doesn't get stiff or rot and the only way it's gonna break is if the hardware gives way.
