Emmitt Smith to announce retirement

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 3, 2005) -- Emmitt Smith, the NFL's career rushing leader, is retiring after 15 years, according to two sources within the NFL.

Smith, who starred for the Dallas Cowboys for 13 seasons and spent the last two years with Arizona, will make the announcement at 4 p.m. in Jacksonville.

He is expected to sign a one-day contract with Dallas so he can retire as a Cowboy. Dallas owner Jerry Jones will be present at the ceremony.

The 35-year-old Smith ran for 18,355 yards and 164 touchdowns in his career, both NFL records. He rushed for 937 yards and nine touchdowns for the Cardinals this season.

Emmitt Smith finished his amazing career with 18,355 rushing yards -- the most of anyone. He was more consistent than he was spectacular, a running back who could be relied on to get tough yards when tough yards were needed.

He rushed for 1,000 yards or more every year between 1991 and 2001. He led the NFL in rushing in 1991, 1992 and 1995 and in touchdowns in three different seasons.

But despite his impressive statistics, he won just two major awards in 15 seasons -- NFL MVP in 1993 and the Super Bowl MVP that same season, when he rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns in the Cowboys' 30-13 win over Buffalo in Atlanta.

I love it when they do that. Very classy.

Hopefully he will run into Jerry Rice at the Super Bowl and talk some sense into him.

Yeah, so when did Jerry Jones ever show any class? Like the way he dumped Tom Landry? That's when I started rooting for whoever plays the Cowboys. I love it when Jones is on the sidelines and his team screws up, which is often.

Jones is a lunatic. I was making a generalization about teams showing a willingness to provide one day contracts to retiring players.

Lighten up, Francis.

Well, we certainly agree on Jerry Jones. Emmitt Smith has more class in his dirty socks than Jones will ever have.

Thanks for the memories Emmitt. Here's to seeing you in the Hall of Fame. Preferably in your first year of eligibility...

Here's one story, (about the third paragraph), but the original was in one of the twin Cities papers.

I attended the U FL homecoming game against Alabama in 1987

That game was in Birmingham, it was not a UF Homecoming game. I was at Joe's Deli eating a "Gator Tail" with my pals and watching that game. Emmitt was amazing in that game. I remember his very first TD run against Tulsa, even then you knew, we had something special in Gainesville.
