That's about what my pasture is. It depends how lush it is. If it's been hot and the grasses are drying out or dried already it'll be OK. What's it look like? wide open, trees, shrubby? Wild grasses? or has it been planted with something?

Mostly open with some trees. Wild grasses. No shrubs. We each have 14 acres on the end with 20 acres of community pasture between us. They want to rotate 4 pastures. This is all new to me. The horses on about an acre now.

estrogen: Duchess' and Hair's advice is exactly what I would say/do. Come to a full stop at the top, Make him stand there till his is calm a quiet then start down slow and keep him slow. I am interested too on the type of bit you are using. Sorry about your finger

CAN you expain what you mean by a one rein stop? Pulling him in a circle?
Is this going to be his permenant home, or is he going to go back to the stable?

You should get that finger checked out by a doctor, and now. I did the same thing a few years ago, jammed my finger and had my rings cut off at one of those "doc-in-a-box" places because my finger swelled up so bad. After that, I just tried to forget about it but it kept hurting and I couldn't bend it down to make a fist anymore. MONTHS later (duhhhhhh) I saw a specialist to see if he could do anything to make my finger work right again and he said if I had of come to see him when it happened, he could have fixed it. Since I waited so long all he could recommend was physical therapy. So there I am, amongs all those horribly injured people getting physical therapy, getting work done on my finger. The physical therapy worked, I know have full use of my finger but if I would have been smart and gone to the doctor in the first place, I wouldn't have had to go through all that.
It's hard for me to evaluate the grass from here, probably even if you took pictures... If it's drying out and has gone to seed, no worries.
If it's a lot lusher than what they are used to, they might be at risk of foundering to be put on it 24/7. If it's tall, it might be good to have it mowed by a brush hogger before they get there. What you don't want is for them to be able to sit and grab big mouthfuls of green grass at every step. If they have to walk around and nibble to get a mouthful, they'll be better off.
It's always good to fence off a smaller paddock they can be put in when you do the other fencing... and it probably wouldn't hurt to put them in that at night and feed them a bland hay before turning them out. When my pasture is borderline too lush, I feed them a bland hay to kindof fill them up before they go out. Then they are just grazing to stay buzy, they aren't gorging on it because they are hungry.
But all my advice is from experience with Northwest grass.... if the other Texans say don't worry, I'd trust them more than me.

That is what they call it at the vocational school equine program. A young student kept her yearling here, and that is what she said they taught her. Basically that is what she did, pulled her around in circles. Old method, different terminology. That would be scary on a hill.
I was thinking about you the other day, Randi. Sorry to hear about your finger. Try to make him go as slow as possible down hills. Even if you have to turn him sideways. Keep one rein a little snugger, if you have to pull his head around. Be careful and have fun!

Yup... all we have is our hand mower! It is at least self propelled.
But don't pity me, I need the excercise! :~D
I did maybe an acre yesterday, will do some more today if it doesn't rain on us.
