Truth be told, a lot of what I knew about fonts came from becoming a Mac acolyte in 1989, and thoroughly reading the manual for MS Word 4 for Mac, which contained a discussion of typography, particuarly how the new technology made proportionally spaced fonts possible for common office documents.

I remember that. Typography was something I had never even much considered or understood before getting involved with Macs.
