Garage floor collapses, taking new SUV with it

ABANDONED CISTERN WAS UNDER STRUCTURE

CENTRAL KENTUCKY BUREAU

McAFEE -- When Lela Stewart heard a noise late Monday night, she thought her cat had accidentally overturned something.

No shelves were disturbed so she looked in the garage -- and discovered her new Ford Escape at the bottom of a 10-foot-deep hole. The garage's concrete floor had collapsed into an abandoned cistern.

"I go to the door and open it and there's a big puff of smoke, which was concrete dust," Stewart said. "I just put my face in my hands and went, 'This can't be happening.'"

Stewart, who has lived in the Mercer County home since 1991, said the cistern probably hasn't contained water for 20 years.

"Had I known it would be dangerous, I definitely wouldn't have put my new truck in there," she said.

Before waterlines were extended into rural areas, many homes across Kentucky had underground cisterns, said Randy Couch, the State Farm Insurance representative in Harrodsburg who has Stewart's home and auto insurance policies.

"Before these rural water districts got city water to people, this was a common way to get water," Couch said.

A Harrodsburg company will begin work Monday to extract the vehicle from the hole.

Meanwhile, Couch said: "I've had several calls from people asking me if I know anybody that could come and check their cistern."

On the upside, she now has a *two* car garage. One downstairs, one upstairs.

And BTW, an Escape is barely an SUV. :)

This is kind of morbid, but wouldn't it be funny if she got fed up with life, stuck a hose in the exhaust, started the engine... and then collapsed into the cistern? That could cause you to reevaluate your decision to pack it in.

Would she have felt better if it fell into a full cistern?

And BTW, an Escape is barely an SUV. :)

It was enough of an ASSAULT SUV to try to dig its way out so it could rampage through the local schoolyard all on its own!

Usually I expect a story about an SUV to be worded like this:
"SUV collapses Garage floor"

anyone that refers to a Ford Escape as a "truck" is mentally deranged anyway.

What is it with all these folks that buy these dinky lil square boxes and call them "trucks"??

If it ain't got a bed and a tailgate, it ain't a truck!!!!!!!

The SUV was trying to get away the cat.

It was an Escape, what did she think it would do.

All it had to do was clear the walls and the guardtowers, and then it would be. free
