LONDON, July 2 (Reuters) - Venus Williams beat fellow American Lindsay Davenport 4-6 7-6 9-7 to win the Wimbledon women's singles title for the third time on Saturday.
Venus, who was playing in her fifth final in six years at the All England Club, outfought the top seed and world number one in the longest women's final in the tournament's history to win her first grand slam title since the U.S. Open of 2001 and a fifth in all.
The 25-year-old, who also won Wimbledon in 2000 and 2001 before losing the next two finals to her sister Serena, has suffered from poor form over the last two years and was seeded 14th in the draw, making her the lowest seed to win the title in Wimbledon history.
Davenport, the Wimbledon champion in 1999, also lost when the two players met in the 2000 final and has now failed to win a grand slam since her Australian Open triumph earlier that same year

I agree. I only saw the 3rd set but it was great. Davenport was playing on nothing but guts towards the end. It reminded me of those great Chrissy Evert vs. Navralitova matches of the 80's when tennis was great.
That's the ticket!
Those matches are classics. Chris and Martina were my idols when I first started playing tennis in the early 80's. They had such different styles of play. Chris was a baseliner and Martina was a serve and volleyer. I loved watching those two women play for a grand slam title.
...and in 2005 (dé jà vu)
Nice trophies. I wonder how much they are worth. They haven't really change much.
I was thinking the same thing. If this were the WWE we'd see a catfight with one hitting the other in the head with that plate.
Congrats Venus & Roger.
Too bad the champs only gets a replica of the championship trophies. I got to see them up close (behind glass of course) at the Wimbledon museum.
Is that Sharapova?
That's her. Every lovely inch of her.
