Hi, long-time lurker, first-time Freeper here.
Listening to the radio here in Chicago, I was hearing of stories that there is a great need for extra-large clothing sizes for the victims (XXL or larger). I recently lost a large amount of weight, and am no longer in need of my XXL shirts and 40-42 inch waist pants. I couldn't take down the information as I was driving, but I would like very much to send these items down to the affected area. It's not a whole lot of stuff I have left, but definitely enough to help someone out.
Does anyone know of any relief agencies or individuals that are accepting donations of clothing, or any place I can send these to? I spoke with a priest today after mass from Catholic Charities and his agency isn't directly accepting clothing, nor really could direct me anywhere to go.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Try a local Salvation Army facility.
Great idea, and welcome to FR as a poster!
You could probably call the Red Cross, or I'm sure you could do a 'net search with the keywords hurricane Katrina and be directed as to where to donate.

I am having a really hard time with this. People are saying that it is the mayor who had the lead but then there is this:
Emergencies & Disasters
Preparing America
In the event of a terrorist attack, natural disaster or other large-scale emergency, the Department of Homeland Security will assume primary responsibility on March 1st for ensuring that emergency response professionals are prepared for any situation. This will entail providing a coordinated, comprehensive federal response to any large-scale crisis and mounting a swift and effective recovery effort. The new Department will also prioritize the important issue of citizen preparedness. Educating America's families on how best to prepare their homes for a disaster and tips for citizens on how to respond in a crisis will be given special attention at DHS"
What gives?
So what are you saying.
sniff
I'll take them if you wanted to ship them to me. My fishing partner has just received 20 members of his family from New Orleans. They arrived here with little more than the clothes on their backs. I called and one of them could use them.
Yup, emphasis on the words FEDERAL RESPONSE. Which by federal law (not to mention the Constitution itself) means nothing within the confines of a sovereign state untill/unless the chief executive of the state requests it. It also doesn't mean DHS is responsible for the STATE RESPONSE or the CITY RESPONSE or the PARISH RESPONSE.
OOPS...sorry...don't know how the hell my post ended up on this thread.
Sorry...AM please ditch it.
The state must cede control to the feds for that to have any weight. Due to the posse commitatus act the feds cannot just seize control of a state or town without the permission of the local officials.
I see your response to the troll got posted back to this thread too. Must have been because it got pulled while we were typing or something.
Another troll mentioning Department of Homeland Security as an excuse to try and blame the President.
What about it?
Having a National Response Plan ready to go does not alleviate the local governments of their responsibilities. Do you honestly think that meant the DHS would personally train every first responder throughout the nation?
Use your head!
I started out on this thread. Where did you start out?
Oh, it wasn't me after all...it was the troll who hijacked a totally unrelated thread that had me all confused. Bad troll, bad troll...
Why? It was a great answer to a stupid post up above.
