Don't listen to Bill Gates. The open-source movement isn't communism.

^^^^^^^^^^^There's a old saying - You can polish a turd all day, but it's still a turd.^^^^^^^^^^^

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!! I'll take your word for it.

http://members.aol.com/kupan787/Rhapsody.htm

LOL

^^^^^^^^Merely putting more polish on it won't fix the real problems.^^^^^^^^^

All you're doing is proving your lack of seeing what the "problems" really are.

^^^^^^^A good working knowledge of Linux system commands is still needed to use them^^^^^^^^^^

A lie repeated a thousand times is still a lie.

^^^^^^^^Mac OS X has the superior technology at affordable prices for desktop computer users - without requiring the user to know anything about UNIX.^^^^^^^^^^^^

SuSE has the superior technology at affordable prices for desktop computer users - without requiring the user to know anything about UNIX.

Ubuntu has the superior technology at affordable prices for desktop computer users - without requiring the user to know anything about UNIX.

Linux is competitive even with the mac. *YOU* personally don't like it. Which is fine. But passing off your opinions as reality when you yourself admit you're using a distro which is designed as a foundation for servers shows the desperation of your argument.

Would you put your grandma on win2k3 server beta 1? I wouldn't either.(assuming linux didn't exist) I'd give her something that's got more polish, and is designed for the types of usage that she'd be going for. Flip the argument. Would you put your server on XP home? In both cases in this paragraph, it's total idiocy.

If you want to make a case for/about joe user, at least base your argument on software that's designed for joe user.

Working Fedora Core 5 here today, also Vector L:inux, both have Firefox 1.05.01 out of the box.....

I think Vector is a little faster....not sure if it is using both of my procesors, of my AMD64 X2 3800+ though.....

I won't argue that the majority of linux/OSS users are leftists, but for the most part the ideology too look for is Altruism.

Or in Linus Torvalds' case, laziness. He considered writing drivers and such to be drudge work, so he opened the source in the hopes that other people would do it for him.

There's a old saying - You can polish a turd all day, but it's still a turd. That pretty well describes desktop Linux. Merely putting more polish on it won't fix the real problems.

FreeBSD is about as user-friendly in the interface as the Linux kernel. Mac OS X is essentially a highly-polished turd.

So what Linux needs is a better polish.

Bill Gates suggested that free-software developers are communists.

I KNEW IT!!!

The Golden Turkey IS Bill Gates.

There is a big problem with this debate over whether or not Open Source is communist.

Communism is one of those Big Lies (a certain religion of peace, better described as the religion of blowing heathens to pieces, comes to mind as another such Big Lie.)

Open Source work may well resemble in some ways what communism claims to be, but it is nothing like what communism is.

Communism is an excuse for tyranny, by another name. And indeed, as you state, Open Source is quite the opposite.

Communism claims to be "people working for the common good in an enlightened world", which is not that far from what Open Source work actually is.

Sensible comparisons with Big Lies are senseless.

Admirable, since most pushing linux refuse to admit this basic fact.

Give it a rest will ya. Did you know that all of the leftists, communists, fascists and other undesirables out there breath air?

Stop breathing air, stop promoting it; THE COMMIES USE IT!

And oh boy, don't get me started on water...

But it's downright cruel to make a typical father-in-law use Linux.

I don't know about that. I converted my mother-in-law to Linux, and I actually like her. :-)  She's been fairly happy with it so far. much happier than when she ran MS-Windows anyway.

Working Fedora Core 5 here today,

Installing it in a VmWare container even as I type. What's your opinion of Core5? I think the install is a lot slicker than previous versions.

Amazing. A Linux discussion where people are discussing differing points of view without lowering themselves to insults, trolling, or having their words twisted, distorted, or otherwise made up out of thin air.

This whole place could truly be utopia without you-know-who.

I agree with what someone said earlier, fedora is fine for those in the know but its not a great end user distro if youre into eye candy.

I use it because all of my servers at the office aer RedHat and it gives me a chance to play with some things..

Your words would have greater impact were they describing a computer/OS instead of an over-priced Neiman-Marcus catalog trinket.

:D

PS: I have a Mac too. However, it sits in my office closet collecting dust.
