Word For The Day, Thursday, December 8, 2005 - homonymous
dictionaries ad nauseum | December 8, 2005 | secret garden

Posted on 12/08/2005 7:58:28 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

homonymous • \hoe-MAH-nuh-mus\ adjective
1 : ambiguous
2 : having the same designation
3 : of, relating to, or being homonyms

Example sentence:
How many states, besides New York, have a homonymous city or town?

Etymology: The "ambiguous" sense of "homonymous" refers mainly to words that have two or more meanings. In the 1600s, logicians and scientists who wanted to refer to (or complain about!) such equivocal words chose a name for them based on Latin and Greek, from Greek "hom-" ("same") and "onyma" ("name"). In time, English speakers came up with another sense of "homonymous," referring to two things having the same name (Hawaii, the state, and Hawaii, the island, for example). Next came the use of "homonymous" to refer to homonyms, such as "see" and "sea." There's also a zoological sense. Sheep and goats whose right horn spirals to the right and left horn spirals to the left are said to be "homonymous."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I gave up-it is too damned cold to work in a vacant house with just my little electric heater to knock the chill off when it is still only 31 outside, so I'm back home and cooking some beans for the chili I'm making for supper-

What a stunt screaming Howard has pulled-
Was it just to get a reaction?
Or did he think talking like a traitor
Would get get him any serious traction

Among the everyday working working folks
Who understand we are at war-
He should have been homonymous
Because this will not make him a star

Except with the lunatic fringe
Of moonbats and koolaid drinkers
The unwashed brain-fried leftists,
Conspiracy theorists and bolshevik thinkers

Thank you! Don't you just know that when Queen Hillary has to be homonymous instead of berating everyone who disagrees with her, she clenches her teeth till they're about to crack?

I remember seeing posts by OPH-was what he did so awful? He could be rude at times, but so are a lot of other posters and they are not banned.

I don't even remember what actually got him banned - but he was NO worse than any of the freepers currently attacking each other over various issues.

And he was a wealth of information of all varieties...... ;^)

It finally got up to 38 here, but it is going to be 16-18 tonight-at least the wind has calmed down so it doesn't feel so frigid.

The beans are cooked, the chili is almost ready-and I just discovered I don't have any cornmeal or cornbread mix-I do have Pioneer baking mix though, so hubby will just have to settle for biscuits with his chili...

chili sounds good. i am ordering pizza. xshub can't eat so i didn't want to cook anything to tantalize him. he doesn't care for pizza so this won't bother him. i suppose that i should go to the store for toilet paper since they are calling for snow tonight ; ). the people in this area go loony when there is ANY amount of snow. actually i am hoping for a snow day, so xsbrownie and i can start baking christmas cookies.
