Word For The Day, Thursday, December 8, 2005 - homonymous
dictionaries ad nauseum | December 8, 2005 | secret garden

Posted on 12/08/2005 7:58:28 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

homonymous • \hoe-MAH-nuh-mus\ adjective
1 : ambiguous
2 : having the same designation
3 : of, relating to, or being homonyms

Example sentence:
How many states, besides New York, have a homonymous city or town?

Etymology: The "ambiguous" sense of "homonymous" refers mainly to words that have two or more meanings. In the 1600s, logicians and scientists who wanted to refer to (or complain about!) such equivocal words chose a name for them based on Latin and Greek, from Greek "hom-" ("same") and "onyma" ("name"). In time, English speakers came up with another sense of "homonymous," referring to two things having the same name (Hawaii, the state, and Hawaii, the island, for example). Next came the use of "homonymous" to refer to homonyms, such as "see" and "sea." There's also a zoological sense. Sheep and goats whose right horn spirals to the right and left horn spirals to the left are said to be "homonymous."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I love the example of NY in the sentence. Everyone assumes that if you are from NY you live in NYC. I always say Upstate NY..... BIG difference.

This homeowners name is homonymous with idiot jerk. This is not how to win friends and influence people. Check out his Christmas decorations.

Slideshow here.

No way Newhart could move that fast! And is that Ed Asner as Santa? In that case, I want to throw stuff which is a lot more lethal than snowballs.

NPOV is
homonymous with Rather's
"objectivity"...

Extreme kookiness,
Disguised as mainstream beliefs
Fix it, see it change

Back to lunacy
In front of your eyes. Nice job,

We saw a license plate yesterday in a restaurant parking lot.........GOATMAN

My husband looked at me and commented either we know what he does for a living, or he has some serious problems........upon seeing it I immediately thought of several classmates :)

And, no doubt, Canadian criminals will happily obey the ban on handguns just as US criminals do.

Liberalism IS a mental disorder.

Actually, I have seen it. If Asner was in it I would have blocked that from my mind.

We're playing the NY Strangers here tonight. Wish us luck! One of our players has been busy lately. Jamie Allison's dad just had a liver transplant up there in Canada and his wife is due for baby #2 next week.
