NEWARK, NJ, United States (UPI) -- New Jersey wiretaps in the unfolding NHL betting scandal indicate Wayne Gretzky knew of his friend`s alleged multimillion-dollar gambling ring.
Gretzky said earlier in the week he had no knowledge of any gambling allegations until his friend Rick Tocchet called him Monday night.
There is no evidence that the hockey hall-of-famer made any bets, the Newark Star-Ledger said. But, investigators are looking into whether he may have placed wagers through his wife, Janet Jones.
Jones was among the gamblers who placed more than $1.7 million in wagers in the past six weeks with the ring allegedly run by Tocchet and a New Jersey state trooper, sources said.
Jones put down $500,000 on games during that six-week period, including $75,000 on last Sunday`s Super Bowl.
Gretzky is the head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL and Tocchet is one of his assistant coaches.

Among those whose names have surfaced in the case are King forward Jeremy Roenick and actress Janet Jones, the wife of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, as well as other current and former players.
Roenick was notified Tuesday that investigators want to interview him, league sources said. He was unavailable for comment after Wednesday night's game in Columbus.
I would hate to see that this is true, but it very well could be.
The Kings took a trouncing from the Cols Blue Jackets last night (7-4). Maybe that played into why he didn't want to comment, but I doubt it.
Oh, no.
Dissapointing if true. The real question comes down to did they (Gretzky, Tocchet) bet on hockey. If they did - see 'ya! To me, it makes no difference who you bet on, just like I don't think it makes a difference that Rose bet on his team to win.
Janet Jones bet $500,000 over a 6 week period! Wow, how could the 'Great One" not have known that? I have a feeling this story is going to have legs. No telling where it will go.
I bet he gets off.
I'll wager (bad pun I know) this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Does anybody suppose that this wiretap story is going to be connected to the NSA wiretap story currently occupying the front pages? Nah! After all, there are a lot of people that secretly wish that a powerful individual like Wayne Gretzky gets taken down, and they're not going to quibble over how it gets done.
The great one has fallen...what a terrible decision on his part to get involved like this.
I heard 1 report this morning that Janet Jones bet a total of $1.7 mil. If Gretzky's assets are THAT LIQUID that he wouldn't miss 1.7mil, then the IRS is certainly going to take note.
'Course maybe it was 1.7 mil Canadian...
This could get Messier (worse pun) for Gretzky.
Wayne feels blue lying to them...(continuing the puns)
Whomever breaks this story will be making a huge power play. Gretzky sold his soul to the Devils and will bring an Avalanche of bad publicity on the NHL.
who put the prosecutorial Predators onto them though?
Yes, but they say Lightening usually doesn't strike twice. He's at the Sabre's point with these Wild allegations; no more being treated like a King, but he's still a Star. The prosecutors will be swirling around like Sharks, to be sure. With heat like this, he will be feeling the Flames without a doubt. Maybe he will wear his lucky Blue Jacket to beat these Predators.
LOL! These puns are so hockey, I mean hokey.
It is going to right to the mystery penalties at the Super Duper Bowl.....
