So here is a shameless vanity post for all you shooting sports enthusiasts. The good news is that Winchester Canyon Gun Club youth programs are atracting Jr. High, High School and collegiate shooters. Thanks to an NRA grant we even have a budget to work with. Our dilema is that we need to replace our replace our aging trainer rifles to support the program. Any suggestions would be appreciated as to make and model. We are looking for new production, .22LR, iron sighted, bolt action rifles, suitable for three position shooting (i.e. not bench rest). A picture of the collegiate club from yesterday's pistol event is below.
Mike
Needs to be single shot. I own a 10-22 and love it, but we have to work with single shots if we are to support the Boy Scouts, too (legal requirement for them).
Are you looking for a single-shot design, or one that's magazine-fed?
Magazine fed would be OK - if we can easily use it in single shot mode - again to keep the BSA happy on the legal front.
Your input would be appreciated. Thanks.
Don't know if there are any available for civilian use, however.
Marlin's are good rifles
I would love to do high-power rifle. BUT, we will go with rimfire .22 LR to keep the younger set happy. One of the great parts of this is that the 'unofficial" events - i.e. just getting together with a few of the kids for a trip to the range are just a blast. I work with the college kids. They are quick learners and young eyes and steady hands make for some fine results.
You forgot to end with the /humor tag. No problem. I got it anyway.
Civilian Marksmanship Program lists many .22 single shot bolt actions, new and used. Remington 40X is hard to beat, and hard to find in good condition.

Remington Model 412 LR single shot bolt action. Safe and easy.
Just so y'all know. The pistols were checked empty by the rangemaster (me) before the second photo was taken.
Since you say you have an NRA grant I would think the NRA itself would be an excellent source of info. They might even be able to point you towards a substantial discount if you're buying in bulk. Good luck to you and best wishes for teaching our young folks the art of the rifle.
H&R CM12 under $300.00.
First rifle i ever shot was at boyscout camp about 10 yrs ago. It was a .22.. Later that summer my father baught me an air rifle and a bb pistol to shoot in the yard.. My passion for firearms has grown tremendously since then..
It all stems back to the boy scouts.. More young men should consider the scouts, it certainly changed my life on many levels for the better. It certainly has helped shape who i am today...
